    I would recommend latches with carribeaners--simply because that's what we use and we have never had a problem. Simple hooks might be absolutely fine--but as you said, better not to learn the hard way. Furthermore, the satisfying clicking noise they make when you latch then really makes you feel...

    Nice set-up! I was at TSC recently, and I saw they had a bin of "red pullets." I'm going to guess that's what you've got...if so, it's a mix of Red Sex-links, New Hampshire Reds, and Rhode Island Reds, I think. You may have been unprepared, but it looks like you sure threw up a coop in a hurry...

    I talk to our chickens in Spanish. Mostly just call them "gallinas" (hens). I'm in AP Spanish in high school, got to practice it somewhere! Who is "chickotay" named after?

    I agree with above post. Sun and light in the coop is always good...chickens love the sun and warmth. However, they can really suffer from being overheated. You want to make sure you have plenty of ventilation in your coop to there is always fresh air in there. Heat lamps or a radiance heating...
