I disagree. The more I see one study after another be disproven and with so many people having some sort of political agenda that affects their judgement, the more I value anecdotal evidence experiences from reliable people.
As I approach my 50s I can honestly say that stereotypes, cliches...
This is an excellent comment. They figure it out. I see so many people making this harder than it has to be.
Chickens thrive on any reasonable diet. They don’t instantly keel over if they happen to eat an onion or an apple seed.
Food, water, shelter, and common sense go a long way.
As others have suggested, I locked my 12 in the coop for a week after I moved them from the brooder.
They go in themselves about 15 minutes before sunset.
And yet they still get decent egg production. Maybe chickens are are resilient and adaptable.
They don’t just rollover and die when they don’t get commercial feed.
I am just coming up on my first full year of owning chickens, so take this for what that is worth. Also, if you are planning to depend on your chickens for money, also ignore this.
I think the 90/10 rule is bullshit. At best it comes from data based upon battery hens in commercial...
The 10% thing is for "optimal" egg laying. If you don't care if the chickens lay 200 eggs a year as opposed to 220, I think you can for the most part disregard it.
IT just depends what you want. IF you are maximizing egg laying then maybe give it consideration. I don't really care if I get...
Also the government harassment that direct to consumer farmers have to go through. I understand the need for oversight of formal corporations and mass producers. But I also feel the average person is capable of making a decision as to whether he wants to buy fresh vegetables or local raised...
Do the math. It may not be pretty, but a can of black beans is $1.39 and a can of Tuna is $.90. IF you had to you could have a 2,000 calorie diet on $12 a day. The SNAP allotment for a person is $250 per month, combine this with food shelves, and other charity, someone who has their wits...
A word about food in general. It is worth remembering that in the US less than 100 years ago malnutrition and hunger were not rare problems.
Now obesity is a bigger problem. The only way to starve or go hungry in this country is to be either a drug addict or mentally ill (or a child of one...
When I moved my guys, I locked them in the coop for a week. The coop is roughly 2.5 times the size of the pen I kept them in until they were 8 weeks. They had no problems transitioning.
Mine do the same. They are around 14 weeks. They come out in the morning and play hard. Then in the heat of the day they go in or under the coop, sometimes they will sit in the shade. Then once the is mostly shaded around 1:30-2PM they come out and stay out until sundown.
I keep both food...
It's amazing how far common sense will go towards keeping Chickens alive and healthy. My take on the 10% thing is that is probably "optimal". You can not be optimal and still have happy productive chickens.
