Two young hens dead within a week - no idea what's happening

This happened on July 22. We had gone through several days of terrible heat. I saw her standing still in the yard one evening and went to check on her. The contents of the soft egg were falling out in pieces. I bathed her, isolated her, and called around for help. The only antibiotic I...

Two young hens dead within a week - no idea what's happening

I have not noticed any unusual poop lately. Everyone seemed to be doing fine until this happened. Several of them are molting, but that is the only thing I've noticed. I did a lice check recently when I noticed the molt starting because a couple of them were lethargic at that time. Nothing...

Two young hens dead within a week - no idea what's happening

Unfortunately after checking, it looks like the local state lab that did necropsies in this region closed down years ago. I don't know why they're still showing up in search results. So I probably won't be able to get it done. I may call a couple of veterinarians tomorrow, but none of them...

Chicken has pale comb and less active

I had the same issue with one of my girls about a month ago, and it turned out to be the signs of her molt starting. She started losing feathers a few days later. She was lethargic and pale for a few days before that, though, and I was very worried. I gave her some Nutri-Drench for a couple...

Two young hens dead within a week - no idea what's happening

I've had a flock of twelve since July 2022 when I got them all as chicks. Everyone was healthy and happy all this time until last Friday when I lost my first girl, an Easter Egger, unexpectedly. I came home from work and she was lying dead in the run like she'd just fallen over. I looked her...

    Strange eggshell issue

Thanks for this. Glad to know my EE is not alone in her particular weirdness!

    Strange eggshell issue

I appreciate the feedback. It makes me feel a little better. I'm hoping since she's young that her egg factory will still get in gear.

    Strange eggshell issue

My chickens eat Nature's Best Organic Layer Pellets. We do give them a few dried worms every day and occasionally grapes and scratch grain on the weekends. They free-range for a few hours every day. I've been trying to increase their feed and mix it with water since they all love that, just...

    Strange eggshell issue

I have an Easter Egger who is eleven months old. She started laying in December, and her eggs have always had some bumpy calcium deposits. I always know her eggs because they're slightly bumpy and misshapen, but nothing drastic or alarming. A few weeks ago, I noticed an empty egg sac, or the...

Hen laying in the snow and lethargic

I'm so sorry. This was so sad to read. Fly high, Melon.

    First time prolapse in pullet?

Another update. All seemed well this morning. Just now, I went out to check on them as they free-range in the afternoon until bedtime. I noticed my NHR preening, so I took a peek at her rear end, and sure enough, the prolapse was back. It looked just like it did last night. I scooped her up...

    First time prolapse in pullet?

Update: I went to bring her inside, and the prolapse is gone and her butt looks pretty normal again. It's a little red, but the major problem seems to have resolved itself, at least for now. Is that common? I will keep an eye on her closely for the next few days.

    First time prolapse in pullet?

I have twelve five-month-old pullets. Two of them started laying recently, and the others are starting to act like they're getting ready, too. I have one New Hampshire Red who seemed totally normal all day, eating and running around as usual, but at bedtime, I noticed this when she got on the...

    Is this a bantam Ameraucana?

Thank you for the info on TSC. I had no idea and thought these were Ameraucanas all this time. Reading about the Easter Eggers tonight, they sound like my chicks. Of the twelve chicks I have currently, these five are by far the most friendly and I enjoy them. And thanks for the tips on...

    Is this a bantam Ameraucana?

I got them from Tractor Supply. They were sold as Ameraucanas and all five have a similar appearance, except one is black and brown and the other two are a mix of gray and brown. Maybe they are EEs. They're friendly and sweet girls, whatever they are. She didn't strike me as that much...
