I know this has been discussed every which way…but wanted input on my particular situation.
I currently have 9 hens. They have a yard that is roughly 65’x55’. They are currently in a very large coop…but it’s really beginning to fall apart and will be getting demolished soon.
Before this brood...
Well, at the end of the day, seems like things are much better off without a rooster.
The older girls and the rooster just could not work it out. I’m proud of my big girls for standing their ground and putting up as much of a fight as they did, but it was too much. The dynamic wasn’t happening...
My rooster is really growing into a handsome devil. He still has an issue here and there with an older girl or two, but the dynamic seems to be working itself out. Guess time tell the tale.
He’s well mannered with us, which is key in the end.
Got a couple pictures of him here.
Well, I take back part of what I said. This young rooster is on the prowl, but the big girls are being very protective of the little girls via a good ole a$$ whooping. He grabbed ahold of an older girl or so at first, but once they realized what’s going on, they are really giving this young man...
Well, about five months to the day, and it’s official, we have a rooster that has taken his flock. Our young man is in charge and in full command of the flock. It’s been building up, but as of today, he’s all over the girls, strutting his stuff and doing as he pleases. He’s slowly been asserting...
So the little fella is definitely the stud muffin amongst the younger crew of ladies. He’s the head honcho, he does a good job already of getting the ladies to go where he wants and is pretty good already at a young age of sounding the alarm if there’s something going on he doesn’t agree with...
Well it’s not quite been two weeks, but things are at a surprisingly good place since everyone is without barrier and all the birds, old and new are all together. I will say though, there is definitely an obvious, “two flock” separation between the older girls and the new birds.
The younger...
Tomorrow is a big day for the little birds. I closed them up for the evening and broke down their outside pen...when everyone gets up and out tomorrow morning, they will all be sharing a run. Once they’re all out, I’ll take down the inside partition as well. They’ll all have to work it out. The...
Yeah, I’m curious. We don’t have a rooster anymore as of a couple months ago. The ladies are pretty tough, but they have been with a rooster, so they know the scoop, and with what I’m seeing, I’ll say this little boy will make a fine rooster and hopefully fit right in.
$22 can be quite a game changer. I got a big metal trash can. It can fit two 50lb bags of feed and a bag of oyster shell. I even put it in the coop, so feeding time itself has become more efficient and more enjoyable.
Currently, I have an established flock. I also have new pullets and a little cockerel who have slowly been getting to know the big birds.
Its been a long while since I’ve seen a rooster grow from a chick, and was just beginning to try and remember when a rooster starts to act like a rooster...
So, today, when I got home from work...I decided to let the little chicks out for a little while. I figure I’ll begin to let mingle here and there a little before the big shebang.
I let them out maybe a half hour, tops. I would say it went pretty good.
My big girls are Wyandottes. Majority...
The little birds have been in the coop a week now. I have a fence partion separating the bigs and littles, they each have separate doors the yard. The chicks just have a little yard tied to the side of the coop within the yard. That way the big birds see them from the inside and can also see...
