Splay leg - 4 day old chick

We got some eggs from a friend after their broody left the nest without all her chicks hatched. We got them into our incubator, but one had been zipping already and had been in open air for hours when they realized mama had left the nest. He had a rough hatch, we had to wet the membrane, and at...

    Hens escaping yard - 4' fence - help,x

Thanks for the feedback. We share fences with our neighbors, so we can't put chicken wire up higher than the 4' fence unfortunately. And our run is fully secure, fully predator proof. They're free range in the yard when they're escaping.

    Hens escaping yard - 4' fence - help,x

Our hens easily clear our 4' fence, and keep getting into the neighbors yards or our front yard. We rent so putting in a higher fence isn't an option. Any ideas that aren't obnoxious to our neighbors?

Broody adopting chicks - day/night, tips?

I tucked them under her wing without her seeing and she's taken them without a worry. 6 under her and 3 still fluffing up in the bator. She's clucking and so happy.

Twice before I pulled him out. It felt aggressive, but I can't really tell. Thank you!

Help! Broody hen pecking at bator chicks I want her to adopt

Okay - thank you! She clucked this time, no growls - but the pecking seemed aggressive. I probably won't sleep if I am not sure she accepted the chick and it's at night. lol

Help! Broody hen pecking at bator chicks I want her to adopt

I tucked it under her wing, but where she could see it. So that was maybe the wrong move. They hatched since 6pm last night and overnight. I still have 2 eggs pipping and 3 eggs that candling are alive, but haven't pipped yet. They're inside the house, and she's out in the coop. Should I...

Broody adopting chicks - day/night, tips?

Correct. She was on the fertile eggs (we got from a friend. We don't have a rooster) for 18 days, and then we pulled them in to incubate them to hatching because she was leaving the nest for a few hours and we weren't sure if she was abandoning the nest. I just introduced her to a chick, and...

Help! Broody hen pecking at bator chicks I want her to adopt

Broody has been setting on eggs for 3 weeks, so she's definitely committed, but it's her first time. Just introduced a chick to her, and she pecked at it. Should I try later or at night, or is it set that she just won't accept them if she doesn't the first time?

Broody adopting chicks - day/night, tips?

Bator chicks hatching, and broody mama has been on eggs for over 3 wks so she's very committed. Any tips for introducing? We tried to move her to a separate area three days ago to prep and she got very stressed. I've seen some intro during day and some overnight - thoughts? Any other tips?

Will chicks hatch late after Texas cold?

We had a hen go broody 21 days ago, and decided to leave the eggs with her through the cold weather in Texas last week. One day she shifted to another nest, and by the time I noticed and moved the eggs back under her, they were pretty cold (Understandably, it was 3°F) Three days ago she seemed...

    Unusually cold temps w/brooding hen

We're in North Texas, and even if it gets cold it rarely lasts more than a few days. Our first hen to get broody happened a couple weeks ago, so we got her fertilized eggs to hatch. Now it's been under freezing for several days and expected for another week. She's at day 10 sitting on the...
