How do I keep my hens from resting in the nesting box during the day in the winter?

Maybe I should suck it up and just clean it out regularly for now.

How do I keep my hens from resting in the nesting box during the day in the winter?

I'm currently using Eaton nesting pads, which would actually be easy to pick out or shake off poop, but I would prefer to not have to if I can find a way around it. I use a hemp/canola blend for the coop floor. It's pretty thick and fluffy. I think it's nice lol. I don't know why they don't...

How do I keep my hens from resting in the nesting box during the day in the winter?

My 6 hens all sleep on the roosts at night, but when it's cold out and there's snow on the ground, they like to hang out in the coop and the 3 top hens seem to enjoy resting in the nesting box. They are not giving me any eggs and they're not broody. Two are just starting to lay again after their...

It cost me around $27. The feeder pan I got from tractor supply was the most costly piece to this ($14 by itself).

I had let out the plug when I thought I screwed the lid on enough but turns out it wasn't enough.

The Simplest Gravity-fed, 5-Gallon Bucket Waterer

I have a small flock of 6, but I finally got tired of filling up my multiple 1-gallon waterers so often. Most ideas I've seen for larger DIY waterers seemed like more work than I was willing to put in, not suitable for freezing temps, or hard to clean. I liked one idea using a standard 5-gallon...

What to go with coop and run being if chickens have sticktight fleas?

One of my hens' face was covered in sticktight fleas and I'm seeing some on other hens. I'm in the middle of removing the bedding from my older enclosed run that had deep bedding. Do I need to dispose of it? Burn it? No chance of using it for compost anymore? 😭 I'm also feeling a little...

Do you think my white rock would be a good mother?

I would also like to know this, but I thought the breed played more a factor. Though buff orpingtons are supposedly known to go broody and mine haven't yet. Uncharacteristically, my buff is also the bully and not the friendliest.

Do you think my white rock would be a good mother?

I think not. She's the most flighty. She was the bottom of the pecking order and when I integrated two new pullets, she was the meanest to them (maybe because was always the lowest?). But she's the most broody chicken of my flock! She's already gone broody 3 times this year. And she's mean when...

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

I use a Google calendar for my beekeeping hobby. I love this method because it makes searching for particular words easy but I don't think I'm ready to get into that level of detail for my chickens lol

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

I have the new feed ingredients but not the old to compare. The new feed is 16% protein.

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

My plan is to eventually grow my flock to 12 (local maximum for my acreage). The hard part will be not getting them all at once to better stagger their ages.

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

It's just a noticeable difference from last year when I was consistently getting 4-5 eggs a day from 5 hens. Sounds like I just need more chickens.

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

This is only my second summer with my OG flock (buff orp, white rock, wyandotte, EE). When they first started laying, I was getting almost an egg from each of them a day. Since July, it's becoming more common for me to get just 1-2 eggs/day. I've checked my birds and to my untrained eye, they...
