Thanks for your reply. I’m hoping it’s a hen too. I don’t really want a rooster but I’m happy to have gained an extra hen! Do you agree that it’s a young bird, maybe 4 or 5 months old?
This chicken just showed up in my yard. I thought it looked like a hen but now I’m questioning those giant tail feathers. It’s been a while since I had a young bird to compare with. I have no idea about age or breed. Though I think it’s a young bird due to its comb and size. It’s quite a bit...
I don't know exactly. "Hatched this spring" according to seller. Here's a pic of a what I believe is a hen that was hatched at the same time and has similar features:
Thanks for the help! Within minutes of posting this, he started trying to climb up on my hens and all doubt was quickly dispelled. He has since been rehomed to someone who was ready for a rooster!
Hi DaraKing, I've done the deep litter method pretty successfully in Albuquerque in the past. I don't think that true composting really occurs so much as the new layers just aid in more absorption. after about 6 months we would shovel out all the spent shavings and compost those. I think...
Representing the south valley of burque over here. Flock of 7 lovely hens! Just wanted to check in with my NM people and wondering if any albuquerque people might want to go in on larger orders of organic feed to reduce cost!
Hello fellow chicken lovers, I have finally found a local organic layer feed that I'm pretty happy with but it's unfortunately only 14% protein. I have noticed a drop in egg production since switching to this feed. I would like to keep using it but supplement the feed with high protein grains...
Thanks guys for the exciting confirmations! I got all the pullets from a local lady who hatched them all. The blue bird she called a lavender something... Possibly Orpington or Australorp.
Well I thought I knew how to identify a roo myself but after housing a secret (and in retrospective obvious) rooster for 2 months I figure I might as well get as much help as I can...
#1 if this isn't a pullet there's no hope for me (22 weeks, buff orp, no eggs yet)
#2 ~14 weeks, speckled...
I've had this Dominique since it was about 14 weeks old and never questioned its gender until it started crowing a few weeks ago. Then I started noticing some tail feathers coming in and its comb has become huge lately. No eggs yet.
Still not sure though as there are no spurs and the comb...
I haven't seen anything but I'll take a look in the morning. What should I do if i find a tear or some other source of pain? I've had her 4 months and she's always sat in the box a lot longer than the others. Seems to me like she has issues passing her eggs. Maybe I should lube her vent?
Any ideas on what the deficiency might be? She eats the same as my other hens who aren't having any problems... They eat a 22% layer feed, oyster shells and bugs from the garden (whatever bugs there may be in the desert that's been on fire lately...) scraps from my kitchen/garden and...
