Thanks everybody. I'll check those out and see if they look right.
Lady of McCamley - I always thought the black one was the same breed, just a different color. She had the same sleek body as the white ones, so it never really occurred to me that she'd be a different breed. I'll check out...
lolol I think that last line is the best quote ever. Yes, I agree that's kinda what I felt the company was saying. and no, I'm really not ok with feeding hormones to my critters. i eat those eggs and sometimes those chickens. Though, I don't buy much organic stuff because I can't afford it.. I...
I am trying to figure out what these are. My father in law had these birds a few years ago but lost contact with the guy he got them from. We'd like to get more of them but don't know what we are looking for. We call them game birds because they are more sleek and thin than most chickens. They...
Just an update. After adding a layer feed, we had 5 eggs the next day. I think we are on the right track now. YAY!
The injured roosters are well enough to attempt putting them back in. We can subdivide the coop with a few minor fixes, so we'll put head rooster and hens on one side and the 3...
I know this thread is pretty old, but just in case anybody is searching for info on Giant Mealworms...
I ordered my giant mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) from RainbowMealWorms.net
When I learned they might be sterile and that nobody seemed to know for sure, I contacted them. Our correspondence...
How do you ensure the eggs don't "travel" at all (like if you were to harvest the frass)? I'm just concerned about not being careful enough and ending up with a beetle/worm problem (either outside or in my feed which will be stored near the mealworms).
I went ahead and ordered some. I should...
My garden is just starting. Just a few tomato, onion and chive plants that I haven't managed to kill yet. So we wouldn't need much. I don't really have a green thumb. Hoping to change that.
Thanks pdirt.
No, I think they are all just immature adults.
Both flocks were given to us. Rough estimate on flock one would be about a year old.
Flock two I have no idea. They crow and mate and all. They are actually calmer roosters than flock one. But they are very different breeds.
You were right. My...
We've actually always had 2-5 roosters at a time and really didn't have too many problems. After they'd establish that initial pecking order, it never seemed to change much and created a fairly peaceful environment. But that was when they were free range during the day and put up at night. And...
From flock one - 2 hens, 2 roosters (1 rooster injured and caged separately)
From flock two - 7 hens, 2 roosters (1 rooster injured and caged with above rooster)
We had a power struggle, the 2 roosters got injured, and a hen so bad she died and we still don't know what happened. (I may have a...
Thanks for the reply and the idea.
I was just wondering the same thing. (I was meandering around the site and got into an absolutely wonderful mealworm farming thread) We have been having some serious cannibal egg eating problems after mixing 2 different flocks and I have been looking into...
Hello all,
I have some mouse dropping contaminated bran mash. While giving it to my horse and/or chickens is out of the question, I was wondering if anybody had an alternative to throwing it out? I feel so wasteful just chucking it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
