I haven't been on for awhile, very busy in the gardens and with the chickens. I just wanted to report that we got our first 3 cubic ft load of compost from the chomposter. It is dark, rich, and smells devine!
Other than that, birds are great, egg production is apprx 28 a wk from 6 birds.

I have started an experimental " chomposter" ( heard that term somewhere on the web) in the chicken run today! I have been researching this and thought how lovely it would be! The browns go down then your greens ( kitchen wastes) go in and the chickens chomp, scratch ( aerate) and add more...
Sorry about your hen!
About the ants, we just dump DE on the hill and sometimes as a line across their path as a barrier. This doesn't kill all of them, but they will move. The other thing you need to do is see if they are " farming aphids". If so you have to work on getting rid ( or reducing )...
Breaking Broody!
I have been busy in the garden and at work so I haven't been at the forum in a while, but I would appreciate a little bit of everyone's wisdom.
My Wyandotte has gone full blown broody, wouldn't leave the box, screaming at everyone all puffed up, etc. I currently have her in...
The heat has been rough!!! We need a break! Sorry that so many have taken a hit. I am also sorry that we will no longer hear of "The Trials and Tribilations of Hoppy the Chicken".
We will suffer on, hopefully not too much longer.
Here are some pics of my BR and BSL. Hope this helps!
all 3 of the above are Rocky. She is a sweetheart.
The above 2 are Link BSL. She is in charge of the flock. She is a great forgager, following us in the garden to get scraps and bugs. Her eggs are proof too. They are...
Sorry, no roos over here. I'm just not brave enough. I always worry some day a neighbor will decide they arent fond of me keeping chickens.
I do hear you about broody. Dot certainly starts to give out the signs. She will go in and steal my RIR's egg and kick her out of the nest. Wow...
I just want to put my two cents in before you take th BR in. I have a BR and a BSL. Poth pullets and laying. Those chicks look very much like Rocky and Link. I will find some pics and post ASAP so you can see.
Goldie, my gold sex, link was the first to lay at about 16 wks old. So yours may be laying soon too.
Goldie is a PRODUCER! Actually 5 of them have been almost dailies with the occasional rest day. But Goldie will lay any where under any condition! When I separated her out for bad behavior...
First week back from vacation. Didn't lose a single girl! A couple garden tragedies, but that is to be expected with the garden! Last couple days have been 6/6. Six hens 6 eggs! I am surprised because my blue egg layer previously laid about 2 a week. Guess she is feeling left out!
My...
