    My tiny foster flock

6 months old now, 4 of the cockerels found a new home at Narrow Way Farm (Squeak, Dot, Clover, and Fin) just before Thanksgiving. Gerri is laying little tiny fairy eggs and mingling well with the established flock. My big, handsome, friendly boy is Sprite. He’s not a fan of the process of...

    My tiny foster flock

So they’re all about 4 months old now, and it’s time to try to find homes. I broke the Cardinal rule: don’t get attached.

    My tiny foster flock

They absolutely are! I only get to see them once a week or so but I see 6 l little heads pop up and look around when they hear me say “cheep cheep!” it’s more than a little adorable. When I pick them up, they settle pretty quickly once it dawns on them that I’m the one holding them. Not a single...

    My tiny foster flock

Thanks! What all directed you to cockerel, if you don’t mind my asking? I was pretty sure about Dot and Clover but not the others. I really don’t have much of a frame of reference, as this is my first go 😊 they’re just over 12 weeks old now.

    My tiny foster flock

The chicks are at the farm now and growing like crazy. No crowing from anyone yet, but time will tell! The coloring has gotten so much more vibrant and unique. Their personalities haven’t changed much since they joined the flock. They fit right in, even bumming a few rides on the goats! They all...

    Worst Gender Luck ever?

Me, three!! My first attempt at incubating and hatching and it looks like I might have ended up with at least 4 cockerels…the jury is still out on #5 and #6 at 5 weeks 🥴

    My tiny foster flock

Update time - stories, personalities, and quite a few pictures! The foster flock is 5 weeks old now and will be going to the farm next weekend. Wattles and combs are cropping up everywhere. They’re all enjoying the extra room to zoom around in the outside pen. Some have ventured onto the edge...

So happy to hear! Any current pictures?

Is my Blue Australorp hen a rooster?

Any word on your little one? I’ve got a chick that seems to fall in the blue australorp category and looked like yours when it was little. 😊 My little flock is about 4-4.5 weeks old now, and here’s a picture from yesterday. Definitely not a large chick, only about 325g (11.4oz).

    My tiny foster flock

No worries, I’m well versed in life getting in the way. I really appreciate the pictures, I see now what differences you’re talking about. Clover’s feathers are definitely more bottled and white. I’ll try to keep getting pictures once they all go to their forever farm in a few weeks…and am...

    My tiny foster flock

Thank you for the explanation 😊 looks like I may have hit the proverbial jackpot with this set of chicks…mostly (if not all) males.

Hmm, what makes you come to those conclusions? Just curious, as I keep finding conflicting information regarding sex-linked traits.

    My tiny foster flock

4-week update! The chicks are growing like weeds…and are as feisty as ever. I’ve been reading a bit and it looks like Dot may be a barred rock hen (single white bar on the wings, white spot on the head). 475g as of this afternoon: Clover is still a major cuddler, still very gentle with me...
