Unfortunately, a week later are beautiful white feather footed Brahma died. We don’t know what happened to her. She just was on the ground and gave her last breath. We did not do an autopsy.(!)
Perhaps she was egg bound, but I really don’t know.

I scatter the straw & poop from my coop out into the run. That straw and the ground which is mostly dirt now, mix when the chickens (4) scratch around. Some smell, but on dry days, the run (about 10’ x 14’) is mild in smell.adding more straw tends to help, and stirring/raking over fresh poops...
We currently have a 5 gallon bucket with openings in the bottom for the chickens to eat from. So most likely we are feeding rats also. I am looking into getting the treadle style feeder options. Have you used the brand called ratproofchickenfeeder?
I really like the deep straw method in the coop, turning it every few days and then taking some out into the run and the girls move that around over their dirt floor. Very minimal cost or smell.
