I have had 2 of my hens killed by black snakes. I caught one in the act with half her body down his throat. I would not have believed it if I had not seen it myself. So my rule of thumb is, if I find one around my coop and my hubby is there, it will get relocated. If I’m at home by myself...
I actually got to see one of my hens poop today. I’m pretty sure there are worms in it....long, white and wriggling around. I’m trying to attach a photo. Please let me know if you know what it is and what I can do. Thanks!
PS. It won’t let me load a picture
3-4 weeks back one of my hens developed a whitish comb and was very lethargic so I brought her in the house and gave her electrolytes for 3 days and she got back to normal. Then 2 weeks ago in the morning when I was opening the coop I found one of my seemingly healthy hens on the ground dead...
My last chick just hatched and it has a big brown something attached to its rear by a thread. Should I cut it off? I thought it would die but its moving all around the incubator pulling this along with it. What is it....a hernia? its stomach? Never seen anything like this before.
The big orpington I was worried about is fine. He came up and is hanging out with his buddy the other orpington.
The other 4 roosters are going crazy trying to get their women out of the coop.
OK this morning all 5 roos came out of the coop easily and the 3 hens are in the coop by themselves.
One of my big orpingtons who decided to quit roosting in the coop is no where to be seen this morning. I really hope he is ok. He did the same thing yesterday. So I'm sure tonight the...
Thank you for ur guidance!! No I don't plan on hatching any more. I think my husband would beat me :) I had already decided to put the hens up in the coop away from the Roos. In the morning when they come out I'm only gonna let the Roos out.
Do you think I can put the 8 week old hens with the...
Let me give you some background so you can fully understand my situation.
I have an adult flock of 9. This was larger, but since Christmas I have lost 3 hens and 1 rooster to some type of predator. That left me with 6 roos and 3 hens. Yes, I know that ratio is WAY out of whack!! But 4 of...
Thank you for all your responses!! I free range my chickens all day every day in the middle of several hundred acres. We will definitely keep on the look out and keep the shotguns/rifles handy!!! If the former Marine I'm married to sees a fox or coyote anywhere near here......Well you get the...
I have a flock of 9 adult chickens......6 roosters and 3 hens....I know that is out of whack...bear with me a moment...At the end of December I had 7 roosters and 6 hens. Well all on the same day my #1 roo ( a white leghorn) and 1 white bantam hen were killed by a weasel we think. I found them...
Thank you ccshambhala for your help.....Yes for a few posts I think some responders forgot what the original question was....So you think they are definitely welsummers? Sometimes their eggs are speckled with darker spots.
Possibly.....my uncle bought the 2 hens and brought them to me....I have no idea the farm they came from. I know the chick would have to be a mix....Either an old english bantam or a blue orpington is the daddy....I'm guessing the old english bantam. The chicks are 3 weeks old now and are...
