Mine refuse to sit under the lamp, they seem to prefer not having it. make your enclosure that he'll be in at night large enough to put the heat lamp at one end, and watch to see if he stays under it or away from it. then go from there
change it as often as you think it needs to be changed, though he'll likely move away from his bedding, especially if he has a pool or pond, youll be amazed at how often they'll sleep on the water.
we have 7 ducks (4 buffs, 3 cayugas) and all are good outside, were actually swimming in their pond during the 23 degree temps we had here in north texas 2 weeks ago. cold weather doesn't seem to bother ducks, ours prefer the cold to the shelter and heat lamp they have.
They are 13 weeks old. They have less of a comb than the wyandottes do with the rose comb. where the comb should be is either flat or a small raised lobe of flesh but its completely smooth. Don't have any pics right now, but will get some tomorrow.
