Eggcellent reply, thank you! I have been reading up on how to determine fertilized or not. Aside from that I think the only problem with using eggs from a new layer is size, but this hen is almost 9 months old and her eggs aren't all that small.

Well, I thought I'd check back in and give an update. To those of you who speculated Ameraucana my hen FINALLY laid her first egg at 8 months old. Bright Blue. Suffice to say she is pure? Either way I am thrilled.
I was sold this as a chick as a Black Australorp, as it has grown it looks nothing like one. It has developed a beard, it is very skittish. Currently about 10 weeks old or so. What's your guess?
Thanks for all of the suggestions. He just went downhill very fast, two days ago I thought he looked a little slow and pale and this morning he was dead. The unfortunate part is I don't think I will ever know.
