Coyotes took 10 birds in broad daylight

It’s true what animal control says. The thing about predators vs prey when culling or relocating. Predators will produce more offspring after a major kill off. Meaning a litter of pups is usually 3-4 that’ll spike to 6-8 pups. Where prey produce the same amount as always. 1-2. For hooves animals...

Plan on it! As for predators, we have red tail hawks, coyotes, foxes, weasels, skunks and stray cats. Weasels are rare. So are the foxes. The coyotes are the main predators. Thankfully no coons or rats or big snakes. I did have a calf moose disregard the fence and go through it. Silly baby.

Coyotes took 10 birds in broad daylight

There’s a motion sensor light pointed in that direction. But I don’t think it’ll do much good seeing how it was a day attack. And to answer your other question about how long the set up has been there... Since last spring. I move the birds to the mares shelter in the winter. Where there’s power...

Coyotes took 10 birds in broad daylight

I only got one pic off before my phone died. The fence is about 150 feet from the left tree line. But the coyotes came from the trees behind. You see the faint tire tracks in the grass? Not the most noticeable ones. Just to the right of those is the path they entered and departed.

I understand your hate to like. I’m not a fan of letting them “go”either. I had a choice at that moment. Catch the Shih Tzu ( big dog, little body syndrome) or focus on the big dogs. I’ll get some pics going as soon as I’m done work.

You know how you get an uneasy feeling sometimes and you shrug it off? Well I had that feeling this afternoon while sitting at home. And ignored it. Now first off, my chooks don't live in town with me. They're actually at my place of business ( except for the young chicks ) outside my friends...

My puppy is my peeps new predator!

There are a lot of friends on this post. Shout out to everyone with the helpful tips! Which is everyone! I would like to ad some things to keep in mind while “rewiring” your pups mind. If you choose the training route instead of the confinement, while chickens are at large. Not completely...

    Australorp Temperament Toward Humans?

Well I totally screwed up that quote thingy. I agree with 21hens-incharge. Friendly was probably not the right word when someone described australorp temperament to the masses. Docile, I think would have been a better term? I have 6 Australorp hens. They stand on my feet when they want...

    Plymouth Rock thread!

Hi all! I have a question for you experienced “ Rock Collectors “. I hav 6 BR pullets @ about 8 weeks old. They LOVE to fly. I have them completely contained in a grow out enclosure. When I put them in with the main flock. Am I going to have to construct a avian net above the electric...

    Unknown Killer

Yup. I agree with Penny. It sounds like a mink or weasel. I’ll go with mink though. Your weasels are relatively small there. But a mink would have no problem moving a brick or getting into a small opening that you may not see yourself.

    Sex of Brahma Chicken??

I’m not great at sexing other breeds or identifying them. But Brahmas I know well enough. That is a handsome BB King!

What breed is this? Sold as light Sussex. Doesn’t look purebred according to online pictures

Dang it! Too many boys! Out of half dozen chicks. She ends up with 5 boys.

About 8 weeks? It seems to have a lot of black speckling? She got it out of the same bin as my miss labeled chicks.
