    Something is stealing our eggs.

As far as I know, we don't have any Rat Snakes around here. But we do have King snakes and Gopher snakes and I've read that those will eat eggs. I happen to love snakes, so won't be killing anything. In fact, whenever I see King snakes in the road I stop and pick them up, yes, with my bare...

I guess a stake out is in order so I can catch it. It'll be interesting to find out what kind of snake it is. It must be a big one!

    Something is stealing our eggs.

It's definitely not a two legged predator. Someone would have to be pretty desperate for eggs to come all this way to steal some. Plus, I have 4 very big dogs.

Snakes was my first guess too. Once they swallow the eggs, how do they get back out though? I'm talking a nest full of eggs overnight. Do they digest that fast?

    Something is stealing our eggs.

We have quite a few chickens and since we have problems with coyotes and bobcats we lock them up at night in the hen house. Twice, we've had a hen setting on eggs, and one day there are eggs under her and the next morning when we go to open the hen house door for them all the eggs are gone...

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

For us it's been mainly the coyotes with a close second being the bobcats. Interestingly enough, we have a whole family of red-shouldered hawks that live in our yard and have been for about 3 years. Just had the two newest babies fledge in fact. But they have never bothered the chickens.

Just found my missing broody in a birdsnest IN A TREE- update page 6

I would definitely move her, nest and all. The chicks could easily fall out of the nest before mama is ready to leave the nest and die. I had a chicken go broody and hide her eggs this year too. I found her eggs in a planter on my back patio. At the time I didn't know she was broody, just...

Introducing new birds to the flock.

Quote: Thank you for the reply. You're right, I didn't want to hear that as I really don't have anywhere else to put them. But I'll do what I have to do to keep them safe, so I guess I'll have to figure something out. The coop itself is about 8x8 foot, but their yard is about 60x50 feet. I...

    Making a dust bath

Quote: Yeah but what you get at pool supply is not food grade. It's very important that you get food grade DE. DE helps to keep parasites from getting on your chickens...mites specially! Ahhh, thank you for the information. I didn't know there were different grades. Do you think the feed...

    Don't want to chose

I hatched some chicken eggs last year and unfortunately we got about 85% Cockerels. I couldn't decide either until they got older. Then I watched them to see which ones were the most aggressive towards the hens and gave those away. I kept a couple of the more docile ones.

    Making a dust bath

I've never heard of this. What are the benefits of supplying them with a DE bath? Also, you can DE at pool supply places.

    Rooster advice

I would replace him. When I was young we always had chickens and I'm the one who took care of them so basically they were my chickens. I had an ornery rooster that always tried to attack me too. I gave him to my friends grandpa and I told him to be careful with him because he was mean. He poo...

Introducing new birds to the flock.

I have a question please. I have some chickens and I recently hatched some new babies. The babies are 6 weeks old and fully feathered now. I moved them from the brooder to a cage inside the chicken coop with the other chickens so the chickens can get used to seeing them. I'm worried that if I...

    Button Quail trade.

HI Everyone, Sorry to disappear on your for a few days. Here's what's happening. After I posted this one of my females decided to set on some eggs and I thought, okay, I'll let her try. Well, it turned out, another female had the same idea and she apparently ran off the first one and took...
