FINAL REPORT:
Yesterday was the end of the road for my meat birds. The original 16 went to the processer at a little over 18 weeks of age. I had hoped to take them in about 3 weeks ago, but the processer was booked and couldnt fit them in.
I had 5 Gray roosters, 2 Black roosters, 3 Black...
I have given my chickens the spent grain from some of my home brewing activities. They eat it just fine, but it is not a 'complete' diet. I would use it only as an add-on, especially if you are feeding meat birds.
I grabbed a pic of the chicks and they look like....well, just chicks. A few of them have the wide stance of a meat bird, but otherwize, they are pretty average. All of them made it through their trip and the first 24 hours at home.
I have the materials and a plan drawn up for a tractor -...
Last evening, I received a small order of meat birds from Myers Poulty Farm. I now have 5 Black Meat Birds, 5 Grey Meat Birds, and 6 Red Cornish Meat Birds. The Reds are not Red Bro - but Myers does offer them as well and they are identified as 'Color Range' in their catalog. What I have are...

I live in the same area and planned to take some birds to a place in Charlotte for processing. I am interested to know if the farmer that processes yours is available to others.
I don't worry about much during the day - at least not about something crawling under the bottom of a tractor. Those critters are mostly night time problems...
UncleHoot - did you catch my question in my earlier post in this thread?
I have the opportunity to plant some seeds in the area where I will use a chicken tractor. Has anyone planted a specific type of plant or variety of seed that the birds love to eat?
I don't have bare ground, but I'd like some denser plant life before putting chickens in that area...
I too would like to have a tractor to keep some meat birds separate from the layers. In order to avoid any predator problems, I have considered a wire floor or a little coop within the tractor that can be secured. I have decided to go with the small coop that can be closed up at night. If I...
My concern is that I live in a semi-rural area with many predators. My thought was that I would install woven wire that was large enough for them to forage, but small enough to keep another animals out.
If nobody has had any bad experiences with traditionally designed tractors, I won't worry...
I am interested to know if it is wise to add woven wire to create a 'floor' for my planned chicken tractor. My thinking is that it will deter critters from getting in as well as keeping the chickens in (if it is set on uneven ground).
Any drawbacks to this?
I realize that chickens arent the brightest of critters, but I hoped mine were a bit smarter than they proved to be yesterday
They are almost 6 weeks old and were moved to the coop two days ago. Yesterday, they had their first opportunity to go outdoors and just 3 of 9 were brave enough to...
I had expected to purchase some traditional chicken wire/poultry netty for my new chicken run... Now I've seen a great variety of wire types and cannot decide which to buy. I will have a run covered with bird netting and plan to bury 6"-12" of the wire in the ground (to discourage critters...
Another newbie here...
I've got a mix of nine young birds that are about three weeks old. Our plan it to keep them for the warmer months and then either sell them or put them in the freezer in the fall - then repeat the process each year. If all goes well, we may turn into year-round keepers...
