I just remember I had a small batch of chicks (about a month old) in a little fence with a topper. A weasle got in there and killed all but 2 of them one afternoon. And when we were kids a spruce marten got into our chicken coop and killed 25 hens in one evening. Both times just chickens dead...
I think just about any of the weasle family is the worst thing you can have around your chickens . They will kill as many as possible as they can in one shot and cache what they don't eat right away. A coyote will grab one then run for the hills :)
Well I put the rocker down and again the temperature spiked it looks like the thermostat is likely the culprit as the light stays on all the time. I have a new batch of eggs on as I have been micromanaging it a bit but going to go down to the UFA a get a new one. I'll look online for some parts...
I got a used 1590 GQF Hova-Bator and I set some eggs after the first batch didn't hatch I blamed the eggs so I got some fresh eggs and put a second batch on. When I went to candle them again nothing after a week. I put a temp minder in the incubator and saw it was at 116 F ! When I turned it...
We got 50 Barred Rocks from the hatchery last July and we've overwintered them in the barn but they don't use the roosts but rather just sleep on the floor like Broilers? Any tips to get them to use the roosts would be appreciated .
I would guess a fox , I had one that was very bold that would just come any time of day and take one . They will even take more than they can eat as they will cache the extra ones.
Thanks for the replies I think I will likely go with the deep litter suggestion I got some access to some wood shavings so if I put a large quantity of these under the roosting area and if the birds keep this stirred up it should be good. I am not a fan of using straw because it tends to matt to...
I keep a flock of about 60-80 birds in a small barn and overwinter them. One of the issues I have is the build up of manure through the course of the winter. In the past I have had to clean the barn in the middle of January not such an easy task when it's -20 and snow everywhere. So been looking...
Hello I live in northern Alberta Canada and so we get extreme cold winter days here especially in December/ January / and sometimes February and from experience chickens don't do well in extreme cold conditions. We house are birds in a nice barn which is insulated and has electricity so light...
Of all the hens that I have raised these still are my favorites because they are so hardy in the long winter months here. Although they will not out produce the Rhode Island Red hen egg wise they endure the winters here a little better than them. Roosters are also not as aggressive with the hens...
Pecking/Canabalism
Keeping a large flock I gave encountered this problem many times so I have developed a few methods to thwart it. Lighting - During long winter months I keep natural light from the hens during the dog days of winter and just provide them artifical red light bulbs. The red glow...

Wheat is my main food of choice for poultry. It has the highest protien of the common grains and the resulting eggs taste is second to none. My usual recipe for chickens is 3 parts wheat 1 part Oats ot Barley although hens perform real well with field peas as well but these are very...
