I initially panicked and cracked open every egg after that for a week just to see if it would pop up again. It didn't. It came out of one of my new layers and in her first week of laying so I think maybe it was just her body trying to get everything sorted. ? I don't know.
One does have the typical yellow spot, but the other black one is a lot darker, with no yellow spot on the head. The darker one has yellow lower down on the belly and a spot on each wing.
So...my young'uns are a week old now and getting their feathers in. I still am unsure what at least four of them are.
This one has been dubbed Angel. She always seems to be watching over the others whenever they are all passed out.
Angel on the right.
So did anyone ever figure out what these were? I cracked open an egg from a new layer this morning and found something similar, not in the yolk, but in the clear part of the egg. It was a small meaty white thing with a bit of blood attached to it.
I have my pair in a pen that is approx. 8x10 with an attached lean-to that is approx 4x8. The lean-to provides just enough room for the two of them to eat comfortably and hide from the rain and wind. I don't keep mine locked in their pen unless I have to (away for the day) and so they get...
I've been using Vetrycin (sp?) spray and some antibiotics in her water from the vet. And yeah, I did know that about BBs...but like I said a couple posts back, the ones I intended to breed should have not been BB. Either way, I'm keeping my hen as long as nature allows her to live a happy...
Its her only wound. And while its bad, she doesn't seem to fazed by it other than a slight limp. I've got her confined to a very small area to limit movement and to keep the wound as clean as possible. He doesn't hardly have spurs yet, so I'm guessing the combination of his weight and...
I just had a breeding injury happen with my hen two days ago. It is really bad. Both 1 yo BB, white hen, bronze tom. The tom is about twice the size of her and so slow and clumsy I didn't even think they were actually breeding. I noticed her limping around a couple hours after I turned them...
Making sure your girl gets enough exercise is probably the key thing to her losing weight. I have one year old BB white hen that was supposed to be food, but I've decided to keep as a pet. At about 5-6 months of age she got so plump that she really did have a hard time walking. I let all my...
I'm starting to second guess my initial thoughts on what breeds they are. All are just starting to get their little feathers, they grow so fast!!
These two are similar to the EEs I ended up with in my last batch, but they don't have the really puffy cheeks.
This one might be a Buff...
So last night while in the Tractor Supply picking out pullets, I couldn't resist going to the duck bin as well. I asked the lady if they knew what breeds were in the bin and she said that all of them were Mallards. Argh! No, they weren't all Mallards. I don't know duck breeds very well, but I...
New babies to raise always get me ridiculously giddy . I brought home 6 mixed pullets and 2 ducklings last night and my hubby just shook his head, as if the birds I already have should be enough. Ha! Well two of the last bunch of chicks ended up being roosters, that I really want to keep. So...
Not new to chickens, but new to the site. I've been using this site for a while now to find answers to my farm bird related questions and figured I should probably just create an account. I'm glad I did! Its nice to see that I'm not the only "crazy chicken lady" who treats her birds like her...
