Question on possible Barred Rock chicks...

I don't know much, but aren't the females supposed to have the ink wash down the fronts of their legs? Baby #1 doesn't seem to have that, but I can't be sure. I don't think he looks like a girl.

Talk to me about saddle feathers

How old does a bird have to be before you can use saddle feathers as a sexing clue? What are you looking for exactly? And does anyone have pictures for a visual learner? Are there some breeds this does not apply to? TIA

    How important is starter feed?

My chicks are now about 8-9 weeks old and are free ranging around the fenced yard all day long. They're eating grass and bugs and dandelions and whatever else they want (including my grape leaves and roses!). We have one adult laying hen who roams with them and shares the coop. I want to...

    ID my bantams?

These came from the assorted bantams bin. Bebe #1 is about the size of a small lime. So adorable. Bebe #2 is slightly bigger, with furry feet. I'm thinking buff cochin? What do you think?

Any tips for picking pullets from the straight run bin?

An old lady at our feed store was hanging chicks by their feet and only taking the ones that didn't go limp- said the pullets will pull up against gravity. She said she's been doing this for years and years and has only pulled a few cockerels. I didn't try it b/c I already have my chicks for...

    Will chickens eat roses?

I have two flower beds in the backyard where the girls free range. I'm wondering what I can plant there that they won't find appetizing. We're in far SE Texas, so I've been considering drought-tolerant ornamentals like red yucca, some types of cactus, and the like, but DH works at a garden...

How to feed your chickens for FREE!

My DH used to dumpster dive at the produce distributor b/c they throw out food that is even LESS ripe than the stuff the supermarkets throw out. Green bananas, barely-ripe apples, etc. He'd put it all in the food dehydrator and eat for free all summer (he was also a vegetarian until he married...

    Help me identify my chicks

Thank you so much! They look really good. I got them within 24 hours of shipping out, and although I just got them this morning, so far so good. ETA: I don't know how many you're planning on ordering, but we only ordered 11 and had to pay $11 extra for having a small order. I found that a...
