I'm seeing this in one of my 2yo Barred Rocks. The no shell thing has been happening for the past several days. I just read about Infectious Bronchitis in Chickens and wondering of this may be the cause. I have noticed she has a wheez in her breathing. The article talked about vaccination, but...
We are in the market for planting a few shrubs for our girls to hangout under as well, for shade and cover. We already have a large Japanese Maple that they spend time under when its leaves come on, but looking for an evergreen type for when we let them roam around in winter and early spring...
Thanks All - I just wanted to know if there are other factors that could cause loss of feathers, other than molt. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some other illness or underlying issue we should be looking for.
One of our ladies have lost a ton of feathers over the past 3-5 days. Is there anything other than molt that would cause rapid feather loss? We are on MD Eastern Shore and while these past few days/nights have not been excessively cold, I'm concerned that she is going to be half-naked through...
Ours went through their molt back at the end of JUL and never really resumed production. We havent seen an egg since mid OCT. Should we be concerned or is this just their normal cycle?
Thanks - I appreciate it.
I read a lot about how the comb helps them regulate body temp - or is a sign of health. So I didnt quite know if this was going to be a egg laying issue or not. Hopefully as the days get longer she will spring into action - no pun intended.
They are sisters - Bielefelders. The one with no comb had her nose scraped up when she was smaller, and it just never grew back. I have another post out there asking what effects no comb would have on egg production. I wasnt really satisfied with the answer "I don't think having or not having a...
Has anyone tried spent fermented grains from a local brewer? If yes - what are the best to ask for and is it something that you can get and store, or does it need to be consumed rather quickly to not go bad?
Checking to see if your girl started laying. We also have one with no comb and is not producing. Her sister is laying every other day now (Started around Christmas). Wondering (hoping) she will start soon!!!
Happy New Year. Our Bielefelders are beyond 30 weeks. One had scrapped her head as a chick and had a scab form at the beak and forehead area. As a result, no comb was developed. She does have a very small waddle. She is also smaller in size and weight than her siblings. My questions are:

We have two Bielefelders. Born in mid May, Full sized and eating healthy (free ranging and organic feed). I know this is probably a bad time to expect them to lay eggs, with the daylight getting shorter and the temperature turning colder (We are on MD Eastern Shore - so its dipping into/below...
Passing the 4 week mark and the weather is getting warmer. We have been putting the chicks in the coop and run all last week, during the day, bringing them in at night. We figure the night temps will stabilize above 60 beginning SAT and we'll make the final transition to full time occupancy...
Thanks everyone. Will update in a few days.
This is our first foray into chickens.....So glad to have found this community to share information and ask novice questions.
