No prob! I guess its like eating an ice cream cone to them-- makes them get cold from the inside! Poor little things...
And, I've never raised fewer than 10 at a time. I generally lose one in the first day or so. (Can usually see a "wimpy-looking" one from the very first.) Only getting two...
I've gotten shipped chicks a few times. Mine have always benefited from warm water at first (rather than cool). I forgot about that and gave one batch of chicks cool water & I had a worse time with pasty butt in that batch. Other than that, I'm can't think of any differences. Some folks like to...
Unless you are planning to show the chick later on, I would probably forgo the shoes & leave baby with mama hen. It might be more difficult to reintegrate the chick into the flock as it gets older. And, its always easier to let mama do the work for you! (Also, you probably already know this...
So, after a predator-filled winter I only have 4 EE hens laying right now. They are all reliable layers EXCEPT about once a week one of my girls lays either a double yolker (yippee!!) OR TWO SUPER-SOFT-SHELLED EGGS. Sometimes she gets both of them in the nest, but sometimes I think the 2nd one...
I just received my order from Cackle this morning and am having a similar good experience. All the babies are happy healthy and doing all the things little chickies do.
It is great to hear other positive anecdotes here.
I was expecting the worst, but am VERY pleasantly surprised! Yay for...
I hadn't ordered from a hatchery before, and I was expecting the worst. BUT, the chickies are here (15 ee pullets, 10 wellsummer pullets and 2 welsummer cockerels that I ordered, plus an extra ee) and very active and healthy-- don't seem stressed at all! Everybody seems to be eating/ drinking/...
Yay for happy chickies!!
I'm on pins & needles waiting for my order from Cackle due to ship next week. I'm so happy to hear your good experience, it eases my nerves a little! This is my first time with shipped babies and with all of the nightmarish stories out there I worry about the poor...
I had a problem like that, too. My bully turned out to be a roo. I made a barrier that kept him away from the others, but where he could still see them. It only took a few days for him to settle down. My birds are 5 months old now and he doesn't bully his girls at all. Pretty good roo, EXCEPT...
One of my EE hens looked just like yours when she was a chick. She's muff-less and has a single comb. She lays really light tan/ pinkish eggs. EE's really can look a multitude of ways, it just depends on what they were crossed with! Good luck with your chickie-- she's a real cutie!!
They emailed me within 24 hours with a ship date. But, I ordered mine back in January. They are probably moving a little slower now because of the spring rush. So far they have been easy to work with: they called me with an anticipated delay on some turkey poults & let me change my order around...
