    Hen with swollen eyes

Yesterday I came back from vacation and noticed my 5-year-old Cochin hen has swelling in the fleshy part around both her eyes. She has plenty of energy and a hearty appetite, but it seems to be slightly impacting her vision- she got a corn cob yesterday and pecked beside it a few times when she...

i want to see pics of your whole flock free ranging

Here are my ladies! Back when Gamma and Aspen were molting and looked like drowned rats. The little black Japanese bantam is no longer with us, though.

    What killed her?

I conclude that it was a hawk. It came back this morning and perched in an oak tree near our yard, staring at the chickens (who we have been keeping in the tiny totally-enclosed part of their run, thankfully!). We also hung old CD's from the trees to scare it away and I think I'm going to put a...

    What killed her?

We do have hawks in our area, unfortunately... yes, the cut from her throat to her tail was pretty neat. Looks like I'll have to put some bird netting over the run for a while... Also, we have one large owl- I've only seen it once, and it was swooping so I didn't get a good look at it- that I...

    What killed her?

My Japanese bantam hen Koka was killed today... She was laying an egg and then something got her. When I let the hens out at around 4:00 PM to range the yard, and Koka didn't come out. I figured she'd probably just found a bunch of worms in the run and didn't want to come out (our run is pretty...

Thanks! When I first saw her I hadn't even considered that breed

    Dutch or OEGB?

She has what looks like a single comb, but it's very tiny and more like a mix of lots of different combs. Like a single comb in the front but then it seems to turn into a pea comb

    Dutch or OEGB?

A few months ago I was given a small black hen from a family friend. I thought she was a Dutch bantam, but now I'm not so sure. She lays white eggs but has red earlobes. Here are some pictures of her

    RIR's not l aying

When chickens molt, they tend to stop laying. Plus, winter slows or stops laying productivity of most breeds. 3 of my 4 GSL's are laying, the fourth one is not because she's molting.

    Stockton Show

I got a pamphlet about it in the mail, complete with a form. I'm gonna enter my Cochin hen (she's actually LF and bantam cross, but she loves the attention she gets at shows) and my OEG bantam hen
