    Poultry Lice and Mites

Also, will the permethrin dust kill the eggs or do I have to try and manually remove them from the feather shafts? I checked my afflicted hen today (day after first treatment) and I didn't see any live lice, but there were still clusters of eggs at the base of a few feather shafts. Thanks!

Did I get a bum flock?

The smaller coop did come with the birds. We built the larger coop and it was empty until the hens arrived. I bathed one of the birds because of a poopy butt and feathers that were holding onto the poop. After blow drying the feathers, then I applied the powder. I follow the chicken chick's...

    Poultry Lice and Mites

Thankfully, it wasn't too bad- $9 for a 32oz bottle. We'll see how fast I go through the bottle!! How dangerous is this chemical for possible inhalation by the hens while I'm spraying them? And same question for the powder- I wore gloves and a dust mask when I applied it to the infected...

Did I get a bum flock?

I do think that the stress on the birds was increased during their first week with us because we did not have enough room in the outdoor space. We had a 1 day notice before the birds arrived and just didn't have time to get a larger outdoor space ready in time, so the first week they only had...

Did I get a bum flock?

Thanks for your help. I think the lice really put me over the edge. Trying to give my hen a butt bath and having them crawl up my arms and into my hair, it was horrible!!! I've ready that poultry lice and human lice are different bugs, but oh man, just thinking about those creepy crawlies...

Did I get a bum flock?

Thanks for your help. The two were originally separated because of the problems with bullying- a few of the hens were just unrelenting and I was concerned for their safety. They each have separate runs that go alongside each other, so they are just separated by a fence. One of my bullied hens...

Did I get a bum flock?

I am new to chickens and took over a flock of 8 hens from a friend at the beginning of October. In my month and a half with the chickens, I have had to deal with one chicken with coccidiosis, one with roundworm, one with an eye that wouldn't open, crazy bullying to the point where two hens had...

    Poultry Lice and Mites

One of my ladies clearly has lice- mostly around her vent and tail feathers. I've given her a bath and sprinkled pyrethim garden and poultry dust on her feathers. Another hen has either mites or another small creepy crawly, also around her tail feathers. Have gone through the same process...

    New to the Flock

Hello! My name is Kate and I recently adopted a flock of 8 chickens from a friend. I'm not sure exactly of all the breeds, but I know I have 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 White Sussex, 1 Americauna, and 2 Black Australorpe, and 2 lovely golden ones that I haven't yet identified. In my month with...
