Ended 2024 Valentine's Day Contest Series—Wattle I Do Without You?

My boy, Gossamer, has caused quite a stir on the Aldi fan pages, posing on the hottest item in the “Aisle of Shame” 🤣 This is his Tinder (or, Tender *cough*) photo.

Blue Silkie Hen and Red Pyle OEG bantam cross?

Thank you!! The first has just pipped! 😂 It will be interesting to see!

Blue Silkie Hen and Red Pyle OEG bantam cross?

My blue Silkie is broody and sitting on two eggs. Pretty certain the father is an OEG red Pyle rooster (I have a white Silkie rooster, but he appears to be asexual 😂) I haven’t been able to find any posts describing this cross—more often, the hen is the OEG (which seems almost counter-intuitive...

Purina layer chicken feed- I wouldn't recommend

Any of you have other pets? You never abruptly change feed. I’ve changed my hens away from and back to Purina Layena (Free Range) and never had any issues. I also don’t give my birds a ton of treats, grubs or supplements… Diarrhea can be caused by increased water consumption during hot...

    MPC Bantam EE 8 weeks

I don’t know if I’d call that “super” red at 8 weeks. Here’s my EE hen at ~8 weeks

    Silkie chick pics?

At 11 weeks, the white has now identified as a cockerel (he started to crow every now and then a few weeks ago) and I’m pretty sure the grey is a pullet. His comb is puffier, legs/toes more feathered and his crest is less rounded. He also acts more like a male. Even though subordinate to the...

Comprehensive list of poisonous plants and trees

They may cost $2, but to me, my birds are priceless :love I garden with them in mind and have filled my yard with forage mix in place of turf grass, and allow them free access to all the raspberries, blackberries blueberries and figs they can eat. I also grow collards and kale just for them...

    Rooster collars? Do they work?

I have an OEG bantam that was part of a straight run bantam mix. He began crowing at 4 weeks. At first, I thought, “ok, he’s no louder than the neighbor’s maltese or the crows that hang out in the neighborhood—we’ll be fine!” But he’s perfected his “Oh, My Darlin’!” crow and it’s louder…and more...

Still thinking pullet, right? 16 weeks.

I have an olive egger (welsummer x cream legbar) and her comb is just as large.

    What breed??

Welsummer, I concur. But I have an olive egger that looks exactly like her—only difference is she has a legbar-like crest, hinting at the cream legbar used in the cross.

10 week Silkie gender reveal 💙

Last year I rehomed two Easter Eggers to a rooster sanctuary, where they are living in a “bachelor flock”. Broke my heart. They were, and still are, like lap dogs! I couldn’t do yardwork without the one guy flying up to perch on my shoulder. I felt like a pirate! 😂 I swore I’d never do straight...

Silkie @10 weeks — Too soon to tell?

Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope!! 🤞🤞 That would mean a 50% male/female split on the 4 straight run bantam chicks I bought. I swore I wouldn’t buy straight run chicks again, but there was a poor chick with terrible pasty butt that wasn’t cleaned very well 😖…and a 4 chick minimum purchase… sooo…...

Silkie @10 weeks — Too soon to tell?

Best I could do—hard to get a clear shot on a squirming, dark-colored bird, on a cloudy day 😂 The pretty blue ear is a newish development on this one. The crest worries me a bit, but even the definite cockerel doesn’t really have streamers yet.

Silkie @10 weeks — Too soon to tell?

This is one of two silkie chicks I got from Tractor Supply. The other is white, much larger (I know you can’t compare different colors) and has begun to crow 😂 I can’t help but compare, and the comb on this chick is much less developed. Also has a much more skittish, non-confrontational...
