My chickens are 15 weeks old, and I am running out of chick feed this week. I want to get another 50 pound bag to save the trip to the store. Can they switch to layer feed at this point or should I buy another 50 pound bag of chick feed?
Thanks
Nice! I've handled them a lot and they just hop right on me as soon as I sit down, I'd hate to have to trade them out for one who maybe wasn't socialized as well.
Well the run/coop isn't totally finished yet but I finished the "tractor" and put them out there for a few hours today and they were super happy, they were actually too hot for a bit and went under the shade part of the tractor. I brought them in about 20 mins ago (6ish) because I'm leaving in a...
My chicks are about 4.5 weeks old now. Supposed to be Delawares (but I got them at a feed store). Their names are Cornbread and Butterbean. Can you please let me know if these are pullets? We can't have a roo in the city.
Thanks.

In the Excelsior. It seems like it's going to be higher then 60s today though!
I was thinking the exact same thought, (out during the day, in during the night for a bit) although I'm mostly eager to get them outside because of their noise while we're trying to sleep with them in the next...
Hello,
We live in San Francisco, our chicks are 4 weeks and a few days old. It's in the 60s during the day and 50s at night. When can the chicks stay outside in their coop at night with no heat lamp? I am worried about the logistics of keeping a heat lamp in our coop.
Thanks
I think they will stay in the smaller run/coop area when there is bad weather. We live in San Francisco so it doesn't snow :)
I'll just place a nest box in their tractor then, that sounds like a plan.
I'm admittedly new to this... Our chicks aren't outside yet but I'm thinking ahead.
When do chickens lay eggs? Is it mostly in the morning?
We have a coop/run for the chickens at night/some days and we're creating a tractor run for them to "free range" safely around the yard. The tractor...
Hi guys,
Can you recommend a place to get chick food either within San Francisco or not to far of a drive? We're running low but I'm busy until after 5:30pm everyday until the weekend after next and most feed stores that require a drive close at 5:30.
I think they should be getting chick...
I wanted to use a cup because a) it doesn't hurt yet but it well b) the feed tends to fall through my fingers and once the feed is on the ground they get distracted c) it's easier to manage a clicker and the feed at the same time with a clicker/cup combo. Just curious which type of cup you're using?
We were have a 6x6 (and way over 6 feet tall) structure we're turning into a chicken enclosure and we were told we could get away with the open air method in our climate.
pics of the enclosure here:

Thanks, I have been doing that, also trying to get them acclimated to the taking food from the cup. I have had some success with the clicker while hand feeding but none will consistently take food from the cup.
What age is appropriate to begin clicker training?
I am using a metal 1/2 cup measuring cup, do you think they would be happier with a plastic clear or white cup? I'm still having trouble getting them to consistently take food from my cup.
