Silent Bob has been laying weak (not wrinkled) shells--some broken, some really soft--and both of our two chooks have egg whites, that, when you break them into the fry-pan, the whites are sort of opaque when they cook and don't look appetizing. Their yolks look fine.
They have full access to...
They get organic layer pellets (also organic scratch) and then they run free for most of the day. They're three Rhode Island Reds and I'm pretty sure it's one of the two "Gertrudes."
What I meant about the egg bursting is that it broke as it came out and yolk was splattered on the wall of...
Thanks CTKen. We always have a separate container for oyster shell but I'd read and I thought maybe it would be good to try mixing into their layer pellet. Thanks for your time!
We have 3 RIR's (all about 3 yrs old) and one of them has been laying soft or weak shelled eggs over the last year. They're free range for most of the day and have full access to their food and plenty of water.
It's very sporadic and we've only caught one of them in the act of laying an egg...
We have 5 RIR's and don't know if this is from them, er what. Anyone know what this might be? It was not stiff and if you straightend it out, would have been about 3-4" long.
Thank you, Everette! We'll be reading through this info and deciding what is best to do. We have 5 RIR in a tractor which is connected to an 8x10 run and we move both pieces about every 3 days. The girls run free on our acre from about noon to near dark, so we don't have a lot of waste left...
Hi LuckyLee,
Where is the best source of information for the DEEP LITTER METHOD? I've been hearing about it and I'm interested in their living in their own best surroundings. Also, can you forward your recipe for your cleaner? It sounds great. Thanks!!!
Your problem isn't the same as mine--I had wild birds in the feeder and we were spending too much time dealing with them--but your solution might be the same. I purchased a couple of different feeders and found this one to be the best: http://www.chooketeria.com/Welcome.html. Wild birds can't...
I just love this forum. I've been putting cooked carcass, after I strain out the broth, into our OmniBlender and pulverizing it. I made what I call "Can Pats" (Cannibal patties) and had assumed it would be OK to feed to the ladies. They needed more protein for their molt and that seemed a...
This was a while ago, but I think the egg looks just right, there in the carton. I posted it for $25 (carton included) on Craig's List as a joke, but thinking that maybe I might be able to pay for the chicken tractor, etc...
I've got Ruby separated from the other three right now. She's been maybe #2 or so in the pecking order and everything was fine yesterday, which was July 4th. There was a bit of noise last night, but we're in a rural area and when I checked on the gurgles during the night, they seemed fine...
I've seen the beak open with my hens and I was told that it was "Gape Worm". I believe that they're trying to breathe and that the Gape worm makes it hard for them. I give them some diatomaceous earth in their food and it seems to go away. My veterinarian friend gave me some de-wormer but...
