    strange egg -- photo attached

One of my hens laid this soft shell egg, but it's the rest of what's in the photo that worries me -- what looks like the start to an outer shell. That shriveled up thing has some little pieces of shell on it. The blood worries me most. Could there be shell pieces/the rest of that outer layer...

    Limping -- anyone got ideas?

How long did it take for yours to go away? I hate seeing her like this for so long. It seems like by now something minor would have healed up.

    Limping -- anyone got ideas?

My 4-month-old Columbian rock pullet has been limping for about 10 days. I see no cuts on her foot or leg, and I soaked it in peroxide to see if anywhere "bubbled." There is no heat and swelling. She doesn't react like it hurts when I palpate it and compare it to her other leg. I've soaked it in...

Is this a weird time to be molting?

I did. I didn't see any evidence, but dusted all the girls with DE to be safe.

Is this a weird time to be molting?

That's helpful, thank you! Although I'm a little worried now because my girl isn't molting in the "order" those articles say she should. She's sort of losing them all over!

Is this a weird time to be molting?

Hi, one of my 15-month-old Partridge Rocks is starting a hard molt. I'm in Kentucky and it's been very hot, so this seems like an odd time. She had a little juvenile molt last fall, never a hard molt. She became very broody about a week ago, so I put her in a crate and separated her for 1 1/2...

Hot eggs in the coop -- OK to eat?

Well there's not much more I can do to ventilate the coop. If it's 98-100 outside it can't get much cooler inside the coop unless I install an air conditioner, which I'm pretty sure my hubby would divorce me over! The coop has 2 windows, the door into the run, a ceiling vent, and I have a fan in...

Hot eggs in the coop -- OK to eat?

Hi there, just wondering if I should worry about eggs spoiling in our crazy hot Kentucky weather? On days I work, eggs sit in our coop for 8+ hours, and it's been getting up to 100 degrees in the coop. Can the eggs go bad? And, I wonder if it's better to get them to room temperature before going...

    Anise oil in grit, ok?

I read anise is an appetite stimulator and is attractive to birds. Your chickens might love it!

    Egg peritonitis -- need advice!

The vet x-rayed her and her whole body was filled with fluid, squishing her heart and lungs. Surgery would entail opening her abdomen, cleaning it out, then her being on antiobiotics for 3 months. This just sounds terrible in and of itself. It cost me nearly $900 to get to this point, and I...

    Egg peritonitis -- need advice!

Hi everyone, I have a 7-month-old partridge rock that my vet is pretty sure has egg peritonitis. I am so devastated, and she's being a real trooper. The vet wants to do surgery, but I'm not putting her through that. After me saying no, he was pretty flippant and offered no other advice. So, for...

Treat worms or cocci first? Help!

So disgusting, yet so helpful!! Thank you! The green poo looks much like what this link shows as possible worms -- and similar symptoms. But, it looks like the rusty poo (they call "coral") I am seeing from my other girls is normal! YAY! Thanks everyone for your input!

Treat worms or cocci first? Help!

No, I'm not sure. They free range a couple hours a day, but there isn't much green out there since we're in a drought. All the grass, etc., is brown. It's very bright green and "mucusy." And her crop always feels empty, when my other girls' crops are very full. ????
