I had a very similar experience!
Several years ago, one of my hens went broody. I gave it some fake eggs for a little while, and then introduced freshly hatched chicks during the night! She hardly knew anything and woke the next morning to find lots of little bundles underneath her!
Id hatch the...
Millefleur Pekin Bantams - Pure Bred
10 chicks I got at 2 weeks from a lovely backyard breeder
6 hens
4 cocks :)
Beautiful aren't they!
Attached is another!
Yes same here :) THE SUSPENSE. Plus, its the first time I've had bantams.
Although I've had 'normal' chickens for years, I don't have any idea how big bantams eggs will be!!
Also, a friend of mine once dubbed a chicken and is became very upset and startled.
To be honest, that's hardly surprising! :)
As you said, without some kind of anaesthetic, the chicken would be in dire pain.
Nothing wrong with a quirky hen is there! :)
I've got a hen just like that!
It's got a HUGE comb hanging down and if I'm honest, I've never picked up on it walking badly so it must do fine. Unless it's really that bad, it seems a bit unnecessary to have it 'dubbed'. Just my point of view.
I had this too.
Nothing to worry about at all.
My chickens went absolutely mad when they saw some chicks I'd bought, just like yours.
I guess it's their instinct. Maybe they think that they're new intruders. They'll get used to the sight of them.
I guess when chickens aren't broody, they...
Personally, I'd call those pullets. The combs are small for a full grown chicken. Don't be worried, I'm sure they'll grow more and fill out, and lay soon too! I wouldn't expect them to lay just yet. They may well make nests in their house and this may lead to eggs soon.
Remember, chickens...
You should massage the crop regularly and make sure it doesn't become stiff/stagnant.
I had this with one of my laying birds before. Turning upside down is a last resort as it can be very dangerous for their breathing. I have had to do this in the past, but only because of how full and stiff...
My chicks have just turned 16 weeks old and are doing very well. (that's them in my profile picture)
When should i start with layers pellets? Are growers required? Several of the hens seem very mature and crouch. Is this a sign that they'll be laying soon?
I'd appreciate some advice!
