I have 6 hens, I give them warm cooked oatmeal mixed with either buttermilk or yogurt, and add some shelled sunflower seeds. I think I will try some raisins next time too. When they see me coming with the "different" bowl they go crazy.
Thank you so much. She is not injured and when I tuck them in she actually will come cuddle with me...so sad. I will rearrange and add another roost for her.
I have noticed the last few weeks that one of my hens spends the night on the floor of the coop. I have a small (4x4) coop, six hens. There is still room on the roost, but she is always on the floor when I close them up at night. One night there were 2 hens, but only one night. Is this...
This is so funny! I'm new to hens and just recently they started to kick their floor straw out. I would go in to check on them and I would say they were having a "dance". I made their little outside door smaller with a lip on the bottom and now their door is only big enough for one hen at a...
No, I go early every morning, usually 1 or 2 eggs, then while I'm doing my work, I collect and go back around noon and then usually 5 or 6. We took six this am and when I checked tonight, there's another in the nest. I didn't check at noon because we had already had 6 eggs.
My girls just started laying the end of October (except Ginger...she was an early bloomer). I have noticed a few times that we get seven eggs with six hens? Is this unusual?
I have lots of straw in there, I usually add a little each evening as they tend to have "dances" and kick a lot of it out. I narrowed their outside door and is keeping most of it in. I also put a "poop" board under the roost every night, and clean it off every morning so their coop is very...
I have six golden comets...and love them. They are great layers and very friendly! This site is the greatest. I didn't realize that people were into their "chicks" so much. Lot to learn, and learned alot on here.
I keep doing things to it, covered back vent from outside, left the bottom opened to get some air flow and built a, hmmm triangle on the high side with a vent on the bottom. This morning it was quite warm in there, they do generate a lot of heat!
I have a small coop 4x4 for 6 hens. Slanted roof vented above their roose (close to their heads) and on the opposite wall. It's driving me crazy making sure they will be ok, we live in Nova Scotia and it can get quite cold here, lots of windchill factors. the coop is insulated but no...
Hi, I'm also a newbie on here, and a new hen owner, and I live in Cape Breton. We have six golden comets and I do worry that they will be ok through the winter! The really didn't like the snow we had last night but there were six eggs this morning!
