    Dangerous chickens?!

Oh my goodness!! Ouch! Thanks for understanding! As if parenting is not hard in itself you constantly feel the pressure to be a super-parent and never let your kids get hurt. Yes!! All that testosterone!! It’s a shame having to rehome all three. I didn’t think my odds were that high ordering 3...

    Dangerous chickens?!

We normally spend quite a bit of time outside with the chickens - (not anymore however!) and up until just this morning I only heard Snow crowing - now I was hearing an odd sound - it was Soot trying to crow!! (As if “she” knew the cats out of the bag.) “Soot” also tried dominance displays for...

    Dangerous chickens?!

Thank you for that... This new behavior came out of nowhere so suddenly and i am taking all the necessary steps to prevent any injuries. I still feel sick inside from it - Accidents do happen... thanks so much for understanding. :)

    Dangerous chickens?!

Are you serious?!?!?! Are they not crowing yet because my white Roo is at the top of the pecking order?? Or they just need to mature. Omg... I can’t have three roosters and one hen

    Dangerous chickens?!

Well, I’ll try to post pictures. But my white silkie is full blown rooster - rowdy and crowing. My ‘mean’ black silkie I’m pretty confident is a hen (but who knows) and my gray silkie looks and acts like a hen as well.

    Dangerous chickens?!

Their actual coop/pen is too small now that we have a big Orpington. I’ll admit the silkies were starting to go stir crazy if I kept them locked up all day before my Orpington came back from her 3 month long ‘vacation’ (It’s a premade coop from Tractor Supply.) Once she was back I had to let...

    Dangerous chickens?!

Oh my gosh thank you so much for your little story. Makes me feel like maybe my situation isn’t the only one out there! I had to smile at your “like a fuzzy demon” :) but I am sorry things didn’t work out and you had to rehome her. I use to think Soot would be a wonderful brood hen to hatch...

    Dangerous chickens?!

Thank you, We didn’t want a rooster originally but the silkie chicks were ONLY sold straight run so that’s how that happened. I thought it’d be fun to raise a batch or two of silkie chicks but now seeing how mine are I don’t know about breeding them

    Dangerous chickens?!

They can ‘free range’ in our fenced backyard now instead of being confined to their small pen. We are forced to have them loose because of the Orpington Helen gets agitated at the rooster and sometimes the hens. Plus our silkies themselves fight each other pretty bad sometimes - even when loose...

    Dangerous chickens?!

Lol! Exactly! :) What a disappointment that everything was fine with my birds until just recently....

    Dangerous chickens?!

I really appreciate your input and never thought about how trying to readjust her behavior towards my daughter would be nearly impossible. :( I’m hoping it’s just a phase or maybe because she is the lowest ranking and most timid in the flock. Just this morning I was out alone with the chickens...

    Dangerous chickens?!

Thank you all for your comments. Please keep them coming! I’m just wondering too if anybody else has had experience like this with a ‘gentle docile breed’ like silkies... It makes me feel absolutely sick inside to think if they had pecked my daughter in the eye. She mimics what I do with the...

    Dangerous chickens?!

So, our story started with bringing home 4 baby chicks of various breeds this past spring as egg layers and fun yard pets. When those chicks were half grown we also obtained 3 day old silkie chicks. Long story short, during this past spring we had a family of FOUR big hawks that terrorized our...

    Identify this new chick!

As ol gray mare said, yes - the markings on the white and gray chick are to identify them as my local feed store had a massive order of other chicks/breeds at the time and plenty of special orders as well including other baby silkies. Interesting answers so far! I gotta admit though my heart...

    Identify this new chick!

Hi! This spring we’ve been raising some standard common breeds (Orpington, barred rock, ameraucana, Minorca) and just the other day got three newly hatched day old Silkie chickens that our local feed store were kind enough to order for us! We requested a gray, black and a white silkie. They...
