I live in Maine so we have no shortage of predators. I had a Bald Eagle swoop down and take a look at the run today. I have the run completely covered in plastic and locked up. At least if it’s a Bald Eagle they would be going out in a blaze of glory. Besides they won’t come out because of the...
Something I realized after I posted this, my neighbors have chickens and ducks and they pretty much only free range. So whether I keep the chickens locked up or not there is plenty of options next door. My property has a lot of open space so it’s easier pickings for my chickens than my...
I had my first bird killed by a Cooper’s hawk today. First Im surprised this little hawk was able to take down a Wyandotte which was basically the same size. The hawk didn’t get enough time to eat so it hung around after I chased it way.
I remember reading some predators can keep coming back...
I have been using terramycin which made a big difference so far. No more foam or bubbles. Thanks for all the info if this doesn’t work then I have another avenue!
Hi
I noticed last night my 20 week old has swelling around one eye with white foam and bubbles. I was reading the other posts but I didn’t come across one with the foam/bubbles. I looked for mites and didn’t see anything. She is acting fine doing normal chicken things. She has been the only one...
Just an update. I upgraded their roosts in the coop and so far so good. I used 2x4’s and bolted them to the existing plastic bars. Before I did the upgrade the stayed outside the coop one time.
Thanks for the advice. I made a tunnel for them with some wire fencing and pine branches. I was going to make a new one. Something more sturdy.
Well for now I have this little coop. I definitely will make a new coop or find a used small shed. They still go in there so hopefully I can make it...
I plan on covering the run with greenhouse plastic. I designed it to have ventilation across the top. I won’t cover that.
Their behavior of staying in the run seems to be random and didn’t coincide with hot days. Which is why I thought they get stuck. Maybe I can upgrade the bars which may...
the coop is New Age Pet ECOFLEX Jumbo Fontana Chicken Barn, 4 to 6 Chicken Capacity. The idea of the coop was to be temporary so I can just get started with my first flock then build a nice one. Do you think it will be fine for the winter until I can make one? I let them free range when I’m...
I will get some pictures.
BTW I have 6 birds and use an automatic door.
I can say the roosting bars are more comfortable for them because they are 2x4’s while the roost bars are smaller in the coop. They went in there tonight. I plan on making a coop this one is temporary for the first year...
Hello
The last few nights my 18 week old chickens are staying on the roosting bars in the run instead of going into their coop at night. Is this normal behavior? They were going in the coop before.
I was thinking the days are getting shorter and they are getting caught on there because it...
