    Growing A Toe?

Good News regarding antibiotics. The swollen area did break open and then crust over. Our vet supplied us with antibiotic syringes and said they must be injected in the breast (NOT thigh). After 4 injections and a quick trip to the vet - all is well. He also recommended against packing the...

    dog eating poop

Our dogs also enjoy this treat. Our Vet says that because the poop has so much nitrogen, it would be better for their livers if they didnt eat it - we have 2 dogs and only 9 chickens, so it isnt a huge problem.

    Growing A Toe?

I will try to get a photo this weekend. I read the links you suggested and one said that 1cc of penicillin, in the thigh, daily will do the trick - no surgery. I am not one to cut into anything, so If it is bumblefoot, that would be my first course of action. Thanks

    Growing A Toe?

I did read about bumblefoot - Does a chicken die from the condition or is does she become incapacitated and vulnerable to predators. Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day!

    Growing A Toe?

4 toes, right! It does look like a bud, but it is at the front/top of the foot between two toes. Now what? Happy Thanksgiving. Mother GOddess

    Growing A Toe?

I have a wyandott hen that looks and acts perfectly fine except she has what looks like a 4th toe emerging! She is 18 months old and her foot has a small lump with a pink bulge. The pink portion looks like good skin as opposed to a nasty infection. I cant get close enough to get a picture...

7 Months Old And No Eggs

They are the real thing - Ameraucanas that is. We researched breeders to be sure. We did see one standing in a nest box last week - is that a hint? When you say squatting - how and when? Is it the submissive pose that chickens take, because these three have never shown any kind of submissive...

7 Months Old And No Eggs

Is it possible to have 3 chickens from the same brood, all sterile? We have 3 Americana's hatched in early April that are not laying. I did check the bones near the vent and they are still closely spaced. Even with that evidence we have done a search of favorite places to be sure they arent...

The great enduring mystery.... WHY CANT I GET EGGS???

I have 3 - 7+month old auracanas. No eggs - I've checked all their favorite places. We have two dogs that cannot get into the coop but can get close enough to snatch any intruders. I checked the bones near the vent and they are still very close together, so I'm pretty sure they havent...

    Just Feathers

I went outside to find NOTHING but feathers left of a 15 week old Auracana. We have two dogs that in one very small area could grab a chicken, but I would think with dogs there would be blood and guts, not just feathers. I did check their stool the next day and although white in color...

    Losing Tail Feathers

i HAVE A BEAUTIFUL SILVER LACE WYANDOTTE (ONE OF 6) THAT IS LOSING HER TAIL FEATHERS. AS OF TODAY SHE HAS NONE! SHE SEEMS PERFECTLY FINE, BUT LOOKS A BIT ODD! NONE OF THE BIRDS ARE IN MOLT, ALTHOUGH THAT BEING SAID THEY HAVE NOT BEEN IN MOLT FOR OVER A YEAR. cAN SHE FLY/STIR WITHOUT A TAIL...

laying less and in different location

I have 6 1 year old wyandottes that are major layers - 5 to 6 eggs per day. No problems, until....We have slowly introduced 4 new Americana pullets. For the time being they are not sleeping in the coop but after about two weeks in a pen where the two groups could see one another, we are...

    Training them to roost

hI! They are great self trainers relative to roosting, if they can see. If you leave the food and water inside, be sure to put water outside as well - they are big water drinkers and get thirsty quickly - too little water and they could go into a molt or perish! We put a dog bowl outside -...

    Best guard birds for chickens?

We have two dogs - although we use invisible fence and the chickens have learned exactly where that invisible line exists, there is still one large open common area. The chickens literally fly through that area. The scent of the dogs seems to keep all critters at bay. We also have large Bald...
