Howdy!
I do have a good number of Sandhill Preservation Dorkings. Beautiful birds and some of my better Dorkings. Back in 2021, I had 3 Sandhill Dorking hens, with all three going broody at once. I lost one of them, but had raised a couple more, so currently have at least 5 Sandhill bloodline...
If you mother geese, you're a goose mom.
I'm sorry you lost Simon. We can't know all the reasons things happen. You have to be willing to put your trust in a Higher Power and accept that sometimes the answer to your prayers isn't what you wanted. I am so very sorry for your loss.
I also don't...
That's a sick gosling. Prepare yourself to lose him.
I agree that the umbilical might be infected. It looks awfully red and is an open sore. That needs to be treated with standard wound care - no hydrogen peroxide, but try to keep the umbilical clean and dry; Betadine or another topical...
If they're laying eggs, they are much older than a month old.
If you haven't been hearing the sounds of goose mating, they aren't mating. They might both be female and share the nest. Goose mating seems, at least with my geese, to be a very noisy affair with lots of yelling involved. Males...
I live in SSE Texas. Many of my hens are 3 years old heading into their fourth year. I had the typical stop in Fall for molting, but most of them were slow to come back. Some hadn't started laying again until the past couple of weeks!
I wouldn't worry about it. You're treating the mites. I'm...
10 chicken eggs and 1 goose egg. Considering there were three green eggs from 5 Ameraucana, 2 cream eggs from 5 Dorkings, and 5 various shades of brown eggs from the other 8 or 10 flock members, it's not that bad.
There are only two geese, and they're in the middle of Goose Rut with the two...
Howdy!
I fear I go the other way. I will make friends with the adult birds, just through constant working and feeding them. Routine is important to most critters, so I try to feed and water the same way every day, with only minor variations.
I stay distant from my birds because I have already...
That's an excellent idea! My current flock is eating crumble and pellets, but avoiding the leftover dust. Mixing in some yogurt, applesauce, or other 'good for them' stuff, will definitely see that not go to waste!
I think, all those long years ago, I Googled something about local hatcheries - I was doing a lot of research into breeds and general chickening information. So, it had to have either been about hatcheries or chicken breeds.
More recently, (Since I forgot I had an account ...)I was searching...
Here it is so many years later and this thread verifies something my husband and I noticed in our teenage geese.
We're both trained for wildlife handling, have lots of behaviorist background, and have been befuddled by the sheer lack of information about domestic geese. (I found and have read...
It sounds like you may be just a smidge North of me ... I'm in the "Golden Coast" region of Texas. A bit South south-west of Houston.
You have a lovely selection of birds, too. I may ask for advice on getting a couple of flocks set up for interbreeding a 'foundation flock', as there isn't one...
Short answer? Yes. I have thought about it. May yet end up going that route.
Right now, I'm working on getting all the birds used to being outside and behaving as I think they should. I'm also learning some interesting things about the goslings, as they are now teenagers with all that entails...
You'll need a way to keep them close to their nest box(es) for mornings, so they aren't tempted to wander off to other nesting sites.
I have a 4 foot chain link fence, but have found that it works really good as an "initial" deterrent. Having a run that is completely enclosed and attached to...
Thank you very much for your kind words. I look forward to being able to share tips and tricks with so many people who share at least one of my interests.
I'm impressed at the listing of birds you care for. Natives and pheasants is what I seem to have seen when I canned. You must have so much...
