Tissue and TP has chemicals and/or deodorant/freshner properties which could be absorbed by the egg thru it's normal processes. Not good...IMHO.
A clean ...non dyed thin white cotton cloth rinsed in hydrogen peroxide...naturally dried, loosely applied......should be considered. We are...
Generally the australorp is not broody. Occasionally we experience one....not often.
I am not aware of a difference from hatcheries. I would not think there would be any.
Just a thought...keep the egg warm with a damp cloth warmed 99-100 degree. 10 minutes is too long......temp will drop.
I have timed hens off of setting eggs 3-4 minutes.....max.
The max you can keep the egg would be 98 to 98.6. Lower than the desired temp for avg. incubation so plan to run over on time.
Let us know how much over, I would est. 3 days.
Finite details however, why not .........we already have 55 pages in this thread. LOL
Age perhaps...maturity.
The one gone and came back as a stranger may be part of the answer.
Suggest trying different things...you may hit on something.
If we could only better communicate with God's creations...we would learn a lot...I suggest.
A couple of thoughts;
Crush egg shells...I don't see need for baking.
Food grade DE is usually available at Rural King.
We are reminded.... they seek out raw protein in their environment.
A short vertical fence around selected area...flower....1' too 2' high... usually deters their interest.
I would consult with your state extension office to see if a necropsy can be obtained on the carcass. The first with a congenital leg issue should not have contributed to it's death.
That could be revealing...for sure.
Just curious...how much ground area do you have for them?
Does the area have plenty of leaves?
What are your plans for the additions from hatchings?
You mention hens...you mention hatching...nothing about males...what breeding plans do you have?
How many males do you need for that many hens?
Do...
Be careful...if you plan to bait...put a chicken in a live trap with the trap closed and see if he wishes to return.
The no killing way....butt the closed end of the baited live trap up against a fence with a contained chicken on the other side of the fence ...and you will probably get him.
The feeding, watering and roosting area of your tractor must be under tarp shade.
Lost...?...from the tractor?
Put the tractor under the tree during hot sun time.
