Question about getting rid of small flock?

Thanks for the suggestions, but I couldn't eat them. The are Buffs, NH Reds, Australorps and Barred Rocks. Not sure if you could say they are friendly or not. I have not made pets out of them, such as holding, etc., but they are good birds, no roosters.

Question about getting rid of small flock?

Due to several circumstances I will be getting rid of my tiny flock soon. Not something I especially want to do but sometimes you just have to face things. My question is this: I have 12 laying hens that are almost 3 years old and a pr. of Bantams. How do I go about getting rid of them. Are the...

    Boiled Eggs

I re-posted this a good while ago from another BYC member, so it is not mine, but it WORKS! Get your water boiling. (I limit each batch to 12 or less) As water is boiling, gently place eggs in one at a time. You will want the water to keep a "gentle" boil. Do not cover. Boil 15-17 minutes. The...

Self Starting "Old Fashioned Girls" by Choice!!!

Congratulations on you new way of living! I have been married 40 years and have a ton of cookbooks, but the very best is one I got as a shower gift from my mother is the "Better Homes and Garden Cookbook" (red/white checked). It has probably been upated many times, but it had the most basic...

    Need turkey stuffing recipe

As they say "you only past this way once" so do it your way. I wish I had had your wisdom at a younger age. Absolutely nothing is better than a breath of your own fresh air. Hopefully there is a little chicken included! I love hearing about people living their dreams. And Canada has that "bigger...

    Need turkey stuffing recipe

Ema, I read you BYC page. I don't know how you do it! You have a very enviable life. I often wish I could start over and live a more "natural" life. I grew up on a small chicken farm, but as a young adult did not fully appreciate the life I had lived. Now as I am getting along in years and have...

    Need turkey stuffing recipe

I saw your post to late to help, but looks like you got a lot. Just wanted to wish you a "Happy Thanksgiving". Although I am in the U.S. we have lots of extended family in southern N.B. celebrating today also.

    "Prince" Feed?

I am considering changing from Purina Sunfresh to Prince feed simply because of price (and the supplier says the results are better with Prince), but I am not sure. Prince has animal protein and I have tried to stay away from that with my girls. Any opinions? Thanks, Gram

    Why bantams?

Why pick a St. Bernard over a Poodle or a pair of navy slacks over a black pair - just because you like it! Just a matter of preference.

    West Central Indiana n00b!

Hi, I am in N. Central IN and cold-hardy is not necessary, unless you just like them. I have Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, NH Reds and some bantams. We do put a heat lamp in during the winter and make every effort to keep water from freezing as they have to have water. Good...

Coop Placement - Sun, Part-shade, or Wooded Backyard?

Hi, I'm no expert, can only go by our own experience. They need shade of some sort, don't know about all shade since I don't know what your climate is like. I live in N. Central IN and it gets pretty hot in the summer. My outside area is not shaded naturally so we have a tarp over half the pen...

    Knox, Indiana on Sunday!

Thanks Carole, I would love to go to Wolfe Lake, but something gets in the way everytime. May1 happens to be my grown daughter's birthday. I am sort of afraid to go because I will want to bring live things home. And my hubby is a terrible packrat and not sure he needs to go either. But I WILL...
