Update:
I just went to the duck house to get the birds' "lunch" and she was on the nest. When I walked in she hissed at me. Good for her! She's showing a bit more ownership!
Then she went out to get some food but when the others finished eating she went to one of the water dishes, drank a lot...
Not me, one of my ducks.
Just for fun I left some eggs in the corner of the duck house and one of my younger ones (hatched last year) decided to sit on them. For the first few days she came off the nest a lot, any time I fed them she would join the flock and then go off with them when they'd...
Haven't been around for a while so a re-introduction might be in order.
I'm Sue, in British Columbia.
Right now I have 11 chickens and 7 runner ducks. All are free range from when I get up in the morning until nearly dark, year round.
I'm a 66 year old widow, happy on my little island.
I give my duck eggs to a chef in town. If he's catering a sandwich lunch he nearly always uses them instead of chicken eggs.
Why not? They're free and they're bigger than chicken eggs.
My main runner drake goes at his chickens all the time. I couldn't show my Australorps at the fair last year because he had pulled out their head feathers attemting to create "chucks" or "dickens".
He has a bit of a reputation among other farm bird people and I can't get rid of him.
You're lucky it's sand. The soil in my ducks' pen is clay and it weighs a ton! I change their water every couple of days in 2 dishpans and one turtle pool.
One of my runners went broody yesterday. I know that's rare for runner ducks and I don't know how long it will last, but she spent about 2 hours throwing shavings over her back and making a nest with her body on the floor of the duck house. Then she settled in and lovingly started to incubate 2...
John's first friend was killed by a raccoon so he hung out with my pullets. It was really cute to see them until he realized they were girls and he was a boy and ...
John the Pervert won his class i.e. drake, any breed. Not too hard since he and his daughter (or granddaughter) were the only entrants, I think. But he also won Best in Show which includes the non-4H kids and the family exhibits.
His daughter came in second.
Yay John!
A neighbour asked me what my ducks and chickens were for, just last week. I compared them to fish, but more fun to watch. She still didn't get it. Should have said that I could get eggs without having to kill them, unlike fish roe.
Yes, they can be a lot of work for me - especially right now...
