    Hawk won't move on

We had the same problem when we first got chickens. Sometimes two attacks a day, but I don’t remember how many we lost in total. There were Red tailed hawks and Cooper, almost like they had shift changes. It was stressful for everyone. We tried keeping them inside for a few weeks and thought...

    Are they all THIS noisy?

Thank you. I think that’s what we’ll end up doing, then!

    Are they all THIS noisy?

Hey, thanks. I’m not really sure how she determined that- she specializes in ‘backyard poultry’, but since Covid, you have to wait in the car while the bird is brought in to be examined. After two years though of observing them everyday, we can easily distinguish them without sight, only...

    Are they all THIS noisy?

Yes, we had to take him to the vet last year for his foot where she confirmed he’s a male. He sometimes picks up treats for her to eat, but other than that, they don’t really do much together, or sleep together in the coop at night. Your females call non-stop all day like that? Do you think...

    3 ducks down by a fox in 3 months…

I completely understand how discouraged you’re feeling. We had 4 free-range ducks. After the Fox got one, we called animal nuisance, who put some kind of urine around the property and wanted to set leg trap, but we have dogs and said no to that. The urine didn’t work as we lost a second duck...

    New chicken family here!

Congrats on your new venture! We have around 30 chickens and 1 Rhode Island Red…she is the friendliest of all of them and loves being carried around. I just know you’re going to love and adore them :)

    Are they all THIS noisy?

We have had Mr. and Mrs. Guinea in our flock of chickens since they were keets two years ago. She wasn’t very noisy the first year, but is progressively becoming noisier and noisier. It’s to the point now, that while everyone else is foraging and sunbathing, she’s strolling around loudly...

    New hawk repellent idea

Update: It has been two years since we placed a blower-man in the yard, and two years of not one single chicken lost to a hawk! If you can get past the eyesore, we 100% recommend trying one out! (Note: It definitely did not deter the Fox, coyotes and bobcat, as we lost a handful of our girls...

    New hawk repellent idea

That was our concern initially, too. The chickens were hesitant of it at first. After a day or two, they were scavenging around it like it wasn't there. We also have a Brittany and an Aussie who have never been phased by it! :)

    New hawk repellent idea

*UPDATE* *UPDATE* It has now been almost three months since we placed the air dancer in the backyard. We have gone from daily sightings and numerous losses...to ZERO! I can say, beyond any doubt, it has been the only effective way that has allowed our chickens to remain free-range. 110%...

    ISO Longtail Japanese Onagadori

I'm so sorry about the Mareks in your flock :( I meant to just 'like' the part about not "buying from them". I too have had the extreme displeasure of dealing with them and I wish I had googled all of their reviews beforehand. Advice if anyone is reading this too late, have already recieved...

Feather Lovers Farm - Buyer Beware

They are vile, disgusting con-artists running a poor quality chicken mill. Feather Lover Farm's physical address is: 3920 hickey ln. In Loomis, Ca. We had the displeasure of being one of their many victims. All 6 of the birds were dead shortly after arriving. They stopped communication...

    New hawk repellent idea

I guess you can't tell from the photo, but we have a ton of evergreen bushes around the house, but they mostly duck under the deck and porch when the hawks are around. Last year, one of the coopers hawks got a hen where they hide in the summer thicket. I do like the idea of cooping them up after...
