I agree. I would not put ash from anything other than from a wood burning stove that burnt only untreated wood. We normally burn a lot of paper in there as well and avoid using it for the chickens since we don't know what is really in the paper.
How much sand do you guys use per chicken? As in...
You should be just fine without heat. Our winters can drop to -40F. Our coop is not insulated (but big -converted from a greenhouse) and the door is always cracked open for free outdoor access. We use the deep litter method and the chickens are just fine. We do however, extend daylight hours...
I live on the Colorado foothills (winters can drop to as low as -40F). However, I have never heated my coop. I used the deep litter method which helps keep it warm. My coop is also big - we converted it from an existing greenhouse. The coop is not insulated. The coop leads into the run which is...
WfW: I'm in!! :) I actually did have a Sultan!! She wasn't so friendly but as a sweet bird. I think she just simply couldn't see was the problem!! :) Congrats on your win!! Your bird is beautiful!!
Thanks so much for all you guys' input! Yes! The Speckled Sussex is the breed I was thinking about! I had 2. One was more friendly than the other and she was such an awesome bird. I had 2 Faverolles but gosh, for the longest time in their pullet days, we had to separate them in another pen...
Do you guys think bantams tend to be more docile? All the bantam hens I've had have been nice. However, they were all docile breeds. I did have a Seabright who was nice but not super friendly, as she won't come hang out with you.
I'm doing some research on breeds for a book I'm working on. I was wondering if anyone can give me some input on what breeds they like for kids?
I have cochins and and silkies which I think are absolutely awesome. I also had Speckles Essexes which were pretty darn cool but at the time I had...
Sorry to hear about your loss :( It sounds like a raccoon attack. They are very vicious. We had 2 break into our coop one night and they tore off heads. Foxes normally carry away the whole chicken and all you will see left is a feather trail. I never had a mink/weasel attack so I can't say if...
Hi Holley,
I'm sorry about the problem. :(
Unfortunately, we don't have anything for the head, only for the back.
There are some sellers on etsy that sell saddles with the shoulder protectors. However, bear in mind that covering the shoulders may cause the hen to become unbalanced and make them...
Unfortunately, we don't have anything for that right now. When you separate her, can the other chickens see her? We've found that for our bullied chickens, if we keep them in an enclosure separate from the others but where the others can still see them, the bullying eventually stops. Depending...
