****** DIY chicken feeder pipe! ******

This isn't a pipe feeder but i thought i would show it anyhow. it works well and follows the same methodology as the pipe feeder. I used scrap lumber to make it. the clear part is a lid to a tote so i can see the feed level. holds about 40 pounds. the metal feeder was in there as that is what...

Should run be complete shade or provide for some sunbathing?

I also live in Missouri and was in the same dilemma as yourself. We opted to have 75% of the run covered with tin and the remaining 25% covered in hardware cloth. Under the tin we have sand and under the cloth we have normal bedding materials for them to scratch around in. Most of their time is...

    First coop.

i have a similar shed with 2 gable vents and my ventilation wasn't enough. i went ahead and added some vents on the opposite walls right below the eave and once the snow melts off the roof going to add to roof vents to get rid of the hot air trapped in the upper parts of the ceiling. Looks like...

    First Coop - Officially addicted

I went out and checked again. Inside is 75% and outside is 65%. Windows were not fogged or frosted however i am going to add roof vents. I have a gable vent on each end (14 x 14") and one small 4" inch vent on the long sides however i think the roof vents that i add will help get the humidity...

    First Coop - Officially addicted

in regards to ventilation i do not have enough at this point. I noticed that this morning as the coop has been closed up b/c of the cold and the humidity was at 80% which i think is high and worried about frost bite?? i am going to put in some roof vents in the next few days in hope to rid the...

    First Coop - Officially addicted

Will do Blooie. thank you all for the feedback. Will the chickens eventually want to roost up on the roosts i put in on their own or is this something i have to train them to do? they seem to have no interest of sleeping anywhere than on the floor?

Thanks for the advice aart! i appreciate it. you were right about the heat lamp. Took that out 2 nights ago and last night got down to 19 degrees. This morning they were happy as any other morning with no issues. Tough birds for sure. I will make the adjustments for the nest boxes. I appreciate it.

    First Coop - Officially addicted

i am in Mid Missouri - our winters have quite a bit of fluctuation but nothing terrible. We have been in the low 20's in the evenings and supposed to be low teens next week. I am contemplating removing the 125 watt bulb in their coop but might wait till after this cold spell. they haven't seen a...

    First Coop - Officially addicted

It's amazing when you think you are done you just keep tweaking things! question for you experience BYC's - i know my chickens are far from laying age but i was wondering if the step i have for them to eventually jump into the nest box is too high (see pic in first post)? Right now at 9 weeks...

    First Coop - Officially addicted

My better half wanted chickens so I went to the web in search of ideas (first time having chickens for both of us) which brought me here - wealth of knowledge i have gained. We have eleven 9 week old birds now that have just spent their first couple nights in their new coop. The utility shed was...
