I have 3 hens (no roosters) just over a year old. They had been laying really well for a while. Now suddenly they have stopped, maybe an egg every few days. And... they've had bald butts for quiet a while. they seem to have molted in march and their butts never filled back in. Is this related...
I have four 20 week old hens and am getting an egg every other day or so. One day I had 2 eggs!!!! It is a lot of fun. I'm always so delighted when there is one!!
I don't know if it's every morning. I notice when/if I have my bedroom window open. It wakes me up - they are right out side my window. I haven't had an complaints, but I wonder if the neighbors hear it. Some times I do close my window so I don't have to hear them if they keep it up. I have 2...
I have 20 week old girls and a couple of them seem to cluck/sing when the sun comes up - around 6 am or so.... it can be a little loud (annoying) any one else experience this? Usually doesn't last long, but I always worry about the neighbors.
my 18 week Buff Orpington has layed 3 eggs in 4 days. They are light tan and about 2 inches tall. I think it is her, her coop mates are 2 dark cornish and a hamburg. I know Orpingtons mature early, so I assume it is her. How long before the eggs are more standard in size? Fun thread!
Yes, I've been told they are dark cornish, that's right. They are dark brown - feathers almost greenish at certain angle. Very sweet birds. There are so many different breeds, and I've read so much about different breeds, I get confused. They are dark cornish - or so I've been told.
thanks for the in put. I bought them as a mix 'bag' of layers. So I wasn't sure what the breeds were when I got them... I'd like to think that the feed store didn't give me a meat bird when I ordered layers... but you never know. I've posted pics in the past and most people thought they were...
Hey fellow Mainers. I got 6 pullets this past April and have been having so much fun watching them grow. I rent, and can't keep the chickens here long term - but my mother-in-law says I can keep them at her place across town. I have been keeping them in what I call their 'summer home' in my back...
From what I understand 3 inches or so of pine bedding should do. They need that to walk on (as opposed to flat newspaper) so that their feet form properly as they grow.
Well, thank you to everyone who offered sound advice and warning. I guess I'll just have to get in a killing mood if it comes back and causes more problems.
I wouldn't ever attempt to relocate it, and I'm not excited to kill it - that doesn't mean I have a brilliant no-kill plan or am treating...
The thing is, the possum didn't get a meal. It just killed one bird and injured another to the point where it died a day later. It didn't eat any of the bird it killed. The chickens are only 4 months old, so no eggs yet.
Did it kill just for the sake of killing? Or did it think there would be...
Two nights ago an opossum got into the coop and killed two chickens. We heard the noise and went out and scared him off (and got a good look at him... so we know what it was). Do I have to worry about him coming back? I've sured up the coop really well. So well I'm not sure how or if I'll be...
I read up quiet a bit about bird wound care, and a LOT of folks said they used neosoprin... which is the only reason I did as well. I made sure it didn't contain any 'caine' as some one else had advised. In any case, what done is done, and I do appreciate your thoughts and kind words. What did...
