Ah wow, ok this would explain things. I have two roos, exact same color as the white one in pic and I've had the hardest time telling if roo or not because of the vent check. The coloring says roo, though. They are also quiet and nicer, so as you said, I'm guessing the hormones haven't kicked...
I've started my backyard adventures with quail. I got my first covey in February and kept a couple keepsakes until I had the time to build a little memory box. I completed it today and will be hanging it up in the kitchen!
I have an orange roo..
that was beating up on another roo (below). I would like my covey to be reds/whites/ambers. I currently have 3 Italian, 1 Pearl and 1 red/white hen. There is one problem with the roo below, though his vent is small and looks similar to the other males, I have yet to...
Here we go, a week or so into laying and the size difference between my jumbo covey and the fawn mix (italian/manchurian/pearl) is becoming less apparent. It's noticeable but not a huge difference.
I work from home so can be quite sedentary and their drama and maintenance provides a welcome reason to get up and "check on the birds". I messed up ordering too few eggs my first hatch and had a batch of 5 unsexed birds I didn't want. I gave them to an older couple and they're getting just as...
yeah that first egg was just odd i think cause it was her first. the 2 in middle are also young birds, 6 wks, just started laying. i think they're off to a good start! now the biggie, that's just the size my big girls lay lol. i have a few of those. these others aren't jumbos so i was...
ok, I processed mine and threw each in ice bath then took them inside for a 2nd rinse and wash and threw them in freezer bag and freezer. Is that ok? I didn't know about the resting! There seems to be a bit of blood in bag but sorta normal like when you buy from market.
The left most egg is from a "pharoah" jumbo, also I believe called "wild". The middle two are from my 2nd covey, a fawn collection with pearl fees, manchurian and italian coturnix. The one on right was a first egg laid by the 2nd covey.
Just a word of warning as I lost a quail this morning.
My quail have a sandbowl I regularly fill with sand, it's made of heavy plastic and one managed this morning to flip it over and get stuck under it. With the heat here (currently 96f) she passed away.
So, check your sand bowls, make sure...
This is a GREAT idea! I have some 3 week olds that I'm trying to nipple train and though some get it, some are just not catching on. I might take one of my gentler big girls and put her up with the little for a day to see if she can show them the ropes.
Just an update. The galvanized trash can was $31 at home depot and the vittle vault $36 for 50lber on amazon. I got the vittle vault for air tightness and it already arrived. Fits the 40lb Purina Gamebird bag perfect with plenty of space up top!
I buy the 40lb Purina Gamebird bags and store them in garage for feed, but spotted a mouse last week. Any suggestions for what will hold the feed and seal it?
