It really doesn't look like anything from the outside, just a really large and full crop. But when I touched it, it was SO squishy. Could it be the crop? Is there any reason a crop would be filled with fluid?
I've got a 6 week old Cornish X (scheduled to butcher in 1.5 weeks) that has a large lump on her breast, sort of below her crop. It's HUGE and fills my cupped hand. It's very soft, almost jiggly, like it's full of water or fluid. She doesn't seem in pain or particularly unhappy, and she's still...
They did perk up. I lost one out of 15, but that seems pretty standard. By day 3, they were more lively, eating more consistently, and sleeping more upright. I had marked a couple on the head with a sharpie who seemed especially droopy, but by day 4 their behavior was no different than the...
Thanks for the feedback. The brooder is in an attic room that is pretty cool--upper 50s--and the thermometer read 90 degrees. The chicks were laying in a heap under the light, so I thought they were likely cold. I'll reassess.
They weren't shipped directly to me, but they were shipped to the...
I tried posting in the meat chicken forum without any responses, so trying again here:
I've successfully raised laying chicks in the past, but this is my first round of meat chicks. I picked up 15 Cornish X yesterday, and they've been in their brooder in our house for 24 hours. It's an...
I'm moving this question to the new chicks forum, it might be a more appropriate place.

There have been so many great suggestions on this post; unfortunately I stopped receiving notifications about updates, so I lost track of it about a week after I posted the initial question. Hopefully other people with mite problems have gotten some useful tips from this thread. I saw a lot of...
Thanks for the links, I just read them both. I'm not familiar with Adams tick and flea spray. I wonder if our farm store carries it...I know they are infested with the Northern Red Fowl Mite. I'll try finding that spray; otherwise I'll do another bath in Dawn dish detergent, and try changing my...
Wow, I've never heard of predatory mites! I wonder if they work on fowl mites? I could call the company and ask. My local farm and garden place recommended trying the ivermectin--he said it would even kill the nits--but obviously not so.

Yep, nestbox shavings were all removed, and the nestbox was sprayed with neem oil as well.

What an interesting idea! I've never heard of this. We use the deep litter method, but maybe I should try sand instead. It seems impossible to get around the fact that the whole coop...
I cannot get rid of mites in my coop. Here's what I've tried:
At the first appearance of mites, I used a few drops of ivermectin on each chicken. Removed all bedding, raked out all detritus in the run, and thoroughly sprayed absolutely everything with neem oil (1 TB concentrate mixed in a...
I'm perplexed. I have 7 hens; 5 molted last October-November. They started laying again this winter, and by end of February were almost in full swing; we were getting 4-6 eggs a day. In early April they tapered off, and for the past 3-4 weeks, we get only 1 egg a day, sometimes none, from only...
Shelby, did your hen eventually die from it? I'm not home during the day when she lays, so I don't really know how hard it is for her to get those jumbo eggs out. Can't be easy though. Here's where I'm stuck: when we got chickens, we made the decision that these would be well cared for...
I'm pretty stumped. Upon further research, it seems that if it was egg peritonitis, she'd be dead by now. It's been at least 6 months since the irregular laying started, and she doesn't display any obvious discomfort. No panting, dragging her tail, odd posture, nothing. She eats and drinks. But...
