    Sexing poults?

I have a bunch of Bronze poults, about a month old. They all look pretty much the same to me. Some have little snood bumps that are bigger than the others' - are these ones boys? Also I've seen one or two of them kind of puffing up at each other- holding their wings out from their body and...

    I have inherited a hen

Someone just left a sick turkey on your doorstep? Instead of dealing with the problem themselves? Jeez. Some people shouldn't have animals/birds in the first place! Sounds like she's getting great care - is her curled toe any better now? Please post some pics when she's recovered.

How to sex turkeys help ASAP

LOL! Sounds like a female. Not a female turkey specifically, just a female as compared with a male...

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

Aawww, they ARE very cute looking. I may have similar 'dispatching' problems a few months down the line. Mine aren't double breasted, just normal Bronzes, so they should be able to live and mate and all that stuff quite normally. I just love the noises turkeys make. Already notice that mine are...

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

Ah, thanks. So if these ten poults are five male and five female, I'd only really be looking to keep one of the boys then...

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

PsS. The one with the curled toes has just died, so I won't get to try straightening them out. I guess it just wasn't right straight from the start. It was oddly shaky and didn't really try to stand up. The one I pulled out of the dried up egg is now out of my incubator and in with the other...

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

Oh, another question: Do turkeys mate up like chickens or like geese? Like, do they pair off or does one male need several females?

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

Well, I'm hoping to pick out the best ones and keep them for breeding, and sell the spares for Xmas dinners. I don't think they'll be full size by this Xmas though so there's every chance I'll end up keeping them all if they're friendly and they've all got different little turkey personalities.

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

TBH I think I was hooked the first time I heard a bunch of turkeys all shouting at their owner as he went over to their pen to feed them. Saw it on a TV programme a while back and have had a hankering after them ever since. They're just hard to track down over here (I'm in the UK) and also...

New turkey keeper with day old poults and questions!

I got a bunch of day old Bronze poults today. Going spare at the place I work - they were hatched to order for a guy who got his collection dates mixed up and realised he didn't actually want them till next month! So I got a few questions... I'm treating them pretty much the same as I would...

    My first rhea egg!

Oh wow! 465g for a 'pullet' egg! That's pretty amazing. I'd eat it. Well... I mean, I'd maybe manage to eat HALF of it. LOL! Do you know how many eggs a year they're supposed to lay?

What to do with the "early bird"?

Well, they can go up to 72 hours without food or water after hatching, so it would almost certainly be fine in there. I've done that before and it's always worked out okay. But it can get a bit annoying when they start kicking the other eggs all over the place. I tend to go in quickly, take out...

    humidity after hatch?

Your unhatched chicks will not drown due to 90% humidity at this point. If your humidity has been correct throughout the incubation and your eggs have already lost the correct amount of moisture, they'll be fine. Chicks drown inside their shells when your humidity has been consistently too...
