bravo! i have to agree with you...great post. my favorite quote:
Chickens are just what they have been for thousands of years: domesticated dinner. Dogs are just what they have been for thousands of years: domesticated hunters.
we just have to be realistic and balanced.
and another thing: we used all recycled material to build everything, the coop/run and the duck house, including all the little "decorative touches", i.e. tire, mirror, etc.
yup! there's nothing like raising your own food and trying to keep your consumption to a minimum. just trying to jump...

my cousins dropped off an adult muscovy today, (they figured i had chickens and ducks so i would know what to do...RIGHT) anyway, i'm not sure if he's injured or sick, but i decided to keep him away from my two scovy girls in a separate pen. he can barely walk right, although he shuffles around...
YESTERDAY, i picked up my 2 scovy girls from the previous owner and there was an egg in the pen. and TODAY, while finishing up their house, we had them in with the chickens and guineas, and AGAIN another egg. it was so cool that i named them both (and i'm not big on naming the birds either until...
i got my hands on 2 muscovy ducks (are the girls called 'hens'???) anyway, pretty awesome huh... and they're already laying too! i love my girls, they have character. we named them noemi and luka. but we're still looking for a male drake if anyone knows of any on MAUI, HI.
wow this whole account is amazing. our meanest predator here is the neighbors cat. a SNAKE? you got bit!? you clubbed it to death with scrap wood after trying to shop its head off with a shovel... in a THUNDERSTORM?!?! :o:o:o
i'm sooo sorry for your loss, but that is some story. i hope every...
At that time, I'd just let out one guinea. It won't go far with everyone else still in the pen. Then you can gradually let out more.
this is a great idea! i definitely think i'll try this. thanks everyone for your suggestions. looks like they're gonna have to deal with the lockdown until...
awesome! thanks alot. kind of random but i'll actually be up in paia this weekend, my cousin has a hula show at the maui arts c.c. and i was gonna ask around for some quackers while there. lemme know if your friends know of anything!
( i had to teach a couple a lesson 1 night,, they wouldnt come in,, so i threw down a handful of feed for the others in the coop,, walked out and closed the screen door,,, and let them stay out and SCREAM to get in with the others to eat.,, i havent had problems with them 2 anymore,,haha)...
so hows everyone doing in the coop?
we're considering the possibility of housing adult guineas in a run/coop with our 6 week chicks. the chicks were there first. probably not a good idea huh?? no real other options yet though until we get their own coop built.
anyway, let us know how things...
If we got a few adult guinea fowl that were used to free ranging would we be able to train them to come home roost in a new coop on our property after allowing them to partially free range in the late afternoon???
i hear they're pretty flighty birds compared to chickens, and if you haven't...
