Hey there BYC! Recently I've noticed that my Austalorp's feathers have been looking a bit strange. I started observing her and my other two hens closely to see if they were picking on her since she's at the bottom of the pecking order. Surprisingly, it appears she is doing the damage to herself...
Hello everybody. I just wanted to take a minute to tell you guys about a hen we had named Vera, who sadly passed away recently due to something that we could have prevented. It was something completely unexpected, and I feel that I should warn other chicken owners of what caused her untimely...

Okay fellow chicken people, I really really need some help/advice.
I have a young Cochin hen who has been brooding for a few weeks now. We've tried icing her, dipping her butt in water, locking her out of the coop, putting her in a cage suspended on boards, and NOTHING we have tried will break...
Hi all, tonight while doing a routine wellness check on my flock, I noticed my standard Cochin had a strange injury on her foot. Her other foot was fine. I checked the bottom of her foot for signs of bumblefoot and it was clear. I thought maybe this is some kind of fungus but I'm not sure. This...
Yeah, all my other birds are fine and have bright, vibrant color to their combs and wattles. This is the best close-up picture I have of her recently:
I guess they're not *that* pale, but they're not nearly as bright as my Australorp's and Easter Egger's wattles and combs.
Hey guys, I just realized that my Cochin has a very pale comb and wattles compared to images here...but ever since she was a baby they've been that way, so I don't think she's ill...she acts normal, lays every day, so I don't know that there's anything wrong with her. Is it normal for some hens...
I don't think there's really anything you can do to make them be quiet. They don't have the mental capacity to be trained like a dog does. Sure, you can condition them to go roost at certain times and things of that nature, but you can't train them to not make noise. They just can't learn that...
a friend of my mom's had been raising chickens for about a year, and after visiting her and doing some research of our own, we decided to get some of our own. our reasons were that store bought eggs are produced by chickens that are horribly mistreated, and thousands upon thousands of male...
My girls like a good rub when they squat too. They love when I rub under their wings and at the sides of their tail end. They kinda purr and fan their tails out. It's so funny, each of them had a signature squat.
Squatting hens is the funniest thing. When my Cochin squats, she makes silly grunting noises. When my Australorp squats, she stomps her feet and presses her body against the ground.
I posted a couple days ago about my girl Vera...a thought just occurred to me to ask you guys about this funny thing she does: when I come near her to pet her, she squats down like she's ready to mate. When I bend down to stroke her back, she gets really into it and makes these silly grunting...
