Hi all! So I just came home from vacation and went out to check on my two hens (both 6 years old, a lavender orpington and an olive egger). The orpington, Phoebe, seemed a little off when I went out there. She was a bit lethargic and her wings were drooping, which I originally attributed to the...
Yeah I know HydroHen isn’t a calcium supplement but I figured it was better than nothing in the interim while I was looking for a calcium supplement. I just give them a standard layer feed with some oyster shells mixed in. Thinking of maybe putting them on a grower feed that’s higher in calcium...
Hi all! I have two 5-year-old hens who refuse to eat oyster shells no matter how hard I try. This summer, they’ve started laying eggs with really thin shells and even laid a soft-shelled egg once. I’ve been adding HydroHen and some electrolyte packets to their water a few times a week which has...
Hi! Here are some photos. Three of my hens are 3 years old and one of them is 5. I have a Wyandotte, Orpington, RIR, and a partridge olive egger. They can all fly. I had an elevated coop before and they had no problem jumping up. And yes, it’s strange since they will go on roosting stick during...
Hi! I can attach a photo tomorrow, but the coop is different from my old one. I always bring them in about 30 mins - 1 hour before sunset so it is light enough for them to see. The coop is well lit and ventilated. I am in the process of getting a ramp installed, but right now I just have to sort...
Hi all! So I moved this past February and my girls, of course, came with me. I have four hens and I purchased a new coop for them when I moved. However, right off the bat, they didn’t roost on the roosting stick at night. I figured I’d give them a couple weeks to settle in and they’d roost...
It has two large vents at the top of the coop, well above the roosting stick, but we covered them up because of the cold. It is still well-ventilated but less drafty that way. I haven’t noticed any blackened tissue but a couple of the hens, especially the molting one, are quite pale.
Hi all. So I live in New England and it has been bitterly cold the past couple of days. It’s been getting down to 0-10 degrees during the nights. It’s 3 degrees tonight and I have four hens. One of them is finishing up her molt and another is not very well equipped for cold weather.
My coop...
Hi all! So I have a 3-year-old Golden Laced Wyandotte named Poppy and I’ve recently noticed that her face/cheeks are turning whiteish. I’m in New England and it gets very cold here (30 F during the day and below freezing at night) so I thought that maybe it was frostbite or something, but I...
Hey all. So I went to collect my girls’ eggs today and saw this one in the nesting box. Not 100% sure who laid it. The rest of the egg is normal and it’s normal on the inside. The shell is a little bit thin but nothing extraordinary. There’s just this weird brown spot on the very top of the egg...
Do you have any advice on how to go about doing that? I’ve never dealt an ingrown feather and would hate to make it worse. I was considering just giving her an epsom salt bath since I know that helps with ingrown toenails on people.
Hi all. So I have a 3-year-old Lavender Orpington named Jennie who has had bowel issues basically her whole life. She’s currently being treated for inflamed intestines (the vet thinks she basically has chicken IBS) which caused diarrhea and a fungal infection on her bum/abdomen area.
These...
