Chicks not coming out of the heat brooder

Your correct, they are coming out now and are drinking their water and messing with the food. It's been two or three years since I hatched eggs so I have forgotten lots that I should know. I have just recently gotten back on this site and have always valued the answers that I receive when I...

Chicks not coming out of the heat brooder

Thanks, It's just what I thought. They are getting more active now and starting to peck at the food. Not really drinking yet. I have never had trouble with them drinking. Once one finds and tries the water the rest seem to follow thought.

Chicks not coming out of the heat brooder

My chicks hatched yesterday and maybe last night. I took them out this morning and put them under the heat pad. Just a few have come out. I have laid some food near their pad and some have come out to eat. I dipped some chicks beaks in the water but they have not been very interested so far...

Hi, I haven't visited this site for about 2-3 years. I continue to raise chickens and have hatched baby chicks for another friend. I am not sure if I want to hatch them for myself because of getting too many roosters. My flock is going into the third year so I will have to replace soon. I...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

I still have chickens, around 30 hens and 2 roosters. I have lots of eggs but have several people who stop in and get them for $2.00 a dozen. I have never changed the price even when eggs were pretty high and maybe still are. Chickens are more of a hobby and give me something to do. Most are...

Chicken killed in coop last night

I have come to the conclusion that it was a raccoon and he was able to grab the chicken and take off its head. The chicken may have been roosting to close to the edge of the run. I have not had any incidents since the night.

Chicken killed in coop last night

Mary, I wish I could get them to a safer place but there are around 45 of them and I don't think they will all fit into the interior of the coop. Also, its too hot for them to be in there all crowded. I'm sure the predator will be back since they have found a way in. I will have to enlist my...

Chicken killed in coop last night

I am going to put a trail camera out there tonight. My family has security cameras all over but I don't think there are any near the chicken coop. I could not see where it had come in. We'll see what happens tonight. I think I will check to see if the chickens are all on their roosts after...

Chicken killed in coop last night

The chicken was laying in the middle of the run so the predator had to have gotten in and killed the chicken. If he had just reached in, the chicken would be near the outside. I plan to go out and check the coop more completely when I let them out to free range. I appreciate all the ideas, I...

Chicken killed in coop last night

I am thinking it was a racoon from what I read here this morning. I do not think an owl could get in. I just have to figure out where the raccoon got in. We have plenty of racoons around here. I have had this coop and run for at least a dozen years and have never had this problem. The wire...

Chicken killed in coop last night

I found a dead chicken in my coop this morning. It's head was off. What could that have been? They were outside in my outer area that has roosts and chicken wire all around. However from two feet up the wire is about 2"x2". I am thinking they got in from there. Anyway, would like to know...

Hen hatching out eggs - need advice

I just had three broody hens share a nesting box at ground level. I put 7 eggs under the first hen and then she was joined by two other broody hens. They shared that nesting box until 3 chicks hatched. I figured that 3 chicks were not enough, so I went to TSC and purchased 6 more. It was cold...

I gave broody hen chicks; couple questions on care

I'm sorry to hear that. I really don't have much experience with putting chicks under brood hens, only this one time. I didn't have that happen, but I was apprehensive at first because it looked as if she might not except them. I tucked them back under the hen again and the third broody went...

I gave broody hen chicks; couple questions on care

The hen might think they are newborn and not in need of water or food. I just put 6 chicks under a broody this last week. I put them all under her during the day. The reason I did it in the daytime was that it was the weather was cold and I had no way to keep them warm unless I put my...
