Thanks again everyone. My hen passed away this morning. She turned out to be an internal layer & yesterday began showing clear symptoms of peritonitis. The antibiotics didn't save her unfortunately, but she did get to sit out in the sun with her friends one last time before she went. RIP. It's...
Thanks, I am doing the safeguard & electrolytes etc, now. She is still the same, she is drinking and will peck a little at food but not eat much. I'm hoping to see improvement after today with the worming. I will continue the 5 days for the wormer. Her crop is not emptying but she appears to be...
Hi,
I'm puzzled with my pet hen and what is wrong with her. Hoping someone with more experience can help.
My 5 year old Dominique 3 days ago was behaving listlessly, tail at half mast, came out of coop last in the AM. It has been very cold here. Day before she seemed great happy active &...
We made it through Irene! My girls were riding out the storm in the bathroom in a big crate. They went back out this afternoon when the wind and rain died down. I'm happy they came in for the night. In the morning we had waist deep floodwaters at each side of our block and in the backyard the...
I remove it. I have a 1/2 inch hardware cloth enclosed run and a hanging feeder and no large gaps and I had a serious mouse problem starting. Once I started removing the feeder the mice left.
This looks very similar to my coop. I have a window on the opposite side of the coop door. That would be west in your setup. It allows for a lot of air movement when the east door is open. Everything covered in hardware cloth. The small area under the coop they love for dust bathing and shade...
I vote for the possum being the culprit. Rats could just go in and eat anything, a raccoon could rip right through the wire. Possum are lazy and maybe just figured out how to grab the chicken and eat a little bit then get tired and goes away. The bacteria stuff sounds rare. Rule out predators 1st.
I had the same problem with RSLs. Nice to people. Got along with other RSLs, but were horrible with the other birds and feather pickers, had laying issues and egg eating issues. Layed beautiful HUGE eggs. But I'd never have them again in my small flock. They are too high maintenance!
They could be adjusting the pecking order, due to the new location and figuring out who the top bird is, now that they were removed from the established flock. The problem is this kind of thing seems to develop into a habit and can get very nasty. If they are working out pecking order issues...
I'm not an expert. Just my limited experience and some things that I found on BYC that helped. I had this problem with a young hen when she started laying and I had been spoiling my chicks with too many treats. She was lethargic and laying very thin shelled and shell less eggs. I stopped with...
I have 2 EEs. One was the sweetest baby and always wanted to hop in my lap. The other was scared of me and was extremely hard to handle. Now they are both very friendly and follow me around the yard. They both let me pick them up. The scared one is still a bit more reserved and only began to be...
I had a chick like that last year, lethargic laying flat out only eating or drinking if I made it get up and poked at the feeder, I read something about a vitamin a / d deficiency and gave it some scrambled eggs with cod-liver oil and put the electrolyte mix from mcmurray in their water...she is...
I use sand. I use one of those doggy poop scoop rakes and just rake up any mess into the scoop part and throw it in the compost! When the sand needs it I just scoop out soiled sand and put in fresh.
