I'm thinking of doing that, sectioning a bit off with some wire and putting a dog carrier in the section for her to sleep. I may need to wait until the bad weather dies down however
Thanks :)
Yeah I think the purple is a bruise, it's lighter today and has gone green! So that's good. I don't think the skin has been picked at today as it all looks fairly intact. Also, as far as I know, we don't have a type of blue kote here, at least not in my area.
I know who the bully is, but the...
We don't have blue kote, it isn't readily available in my area and it would be expensive and take a long time to get here :/ otherwise I would love to be using it
I'm more concerned though that the skin is already a purple colour without the use of any purple coloured treatment.
One of my hens has been plucked in a small area on her back a couple of days ago, and the skin has turned a purple colour. I'm not sure if this is a sign or healing or if it's getting worse. We've been putting antiseptic cream on it to stop infection but I'm not sure if it's working.
There...
Hmm, our hens usually lay in the morning/early afternoon, while this was when it was almost dark. And all of the eggs had long been laid when we caught her sitting on them.
I have heard that some can be broody, but we'll see in the morning. If she is we can keen her from the nests after our...
Today my family and I were very busy and couldn't collect the eggs in time, and when I came home, I found one of our reds sitting on the nest. My young cousin collected the eggs out from under her, and after doing so the hen left the nest. When she returned, she seemed very distressed and was...
From right when we first got our hens, there has been one that "plucks" the feathers of the other three. The difference between this plucking and regular plucking is that only half the feather gets plucked. So the three that get plucked by the other hen are left with a white sort of fluffy...
Yeah, mine sit on the roost but they all sit on the same one...
Here's a photo:
I suppose they're comfortable but one just seemed to be sitting on top of the other, which I thought couldn't be good. But they seem happy like that!
We've had ours for a few months, since March, and I think the problem is that the coop isn't well built, the roosts are on the same level as the nests so they tend to go for the nests. And since we blocked the nests off they're just sitting on the one roost...
I'll try putting them on the...
So a while back we had some trouble with our hens sleeping in the nests, and we fixed it by putting a block to the nests. However, recently they've started to sleep on the same roost, all four of them. Admittedly the coop is a little overcrowded (though the place we got it from said it could...
I think she's fairly okay, she only had a slight limp when walking faster. If it continues I'll definitely take your advice.
I'm just afraid that the "bullying" will go down a violent route, but hopefully it'll stop once the hierarchy is re-established.
Thanks for your reply!
So this morning my family and I woke up to one of our hens sitting on the ground, and when we walked towards her she got up and was limping.
As the day went on, she seemed to get better, she was able to walk without falling, despite still having the tiniest limp. However I think by the time...
